BRF Jar Innoc hole size matter?
    #9022265 - 10/03/08 04:29 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I just added 5 more brand new jars to my jar collection and knocked them up with my other previously used jars a few days ago. One thing that I just noticed today is I made the inoculation holes quite a bit smaller this time. If the hole is big enough for the needle to go into is this enough for Gas exchange?

I guess what I'm asking is, is there such thing as too small of a size for inoculation holes concerning BRF jars in regard to gas exchange?

Yes, they will be fine for gas exchange.

So a 1/8 inch hole would be ok then?

Four holes at 1/16" to 1/8" (1mm to 3mm) is the appropriate size.  If they're larger than that, you run the risk of causing premature pinning in the jars.

Thanks guys!  I used an 1/8 drill bit.  The holes I had in my first set of pre-made PF jars I had shipped to me had 1/4 inch holes.  So that is probably another reason (added on to my list of things I did wrong) that my jars have failed.  Good to know.  Thanks fellas!  As always your advice is well valued!  Have an excellent day!  :super:
