I am not familiar with many of the newer types, but for the substrate I use (rye grass seed) and my conditions, Australians and Tazmanians are my favorites for maximizing yield. B+ is also a good one. And Amazonian.
If you can develop a method of using brown whole grain rice as a substrate, I suspect even the types that tend to not yield well would yield quite nicely. Rice is tough to work with, since it clumps so badly, but if you can get it to work, it is the Holy Grail of substrates... IMHO

It's funny you say that because I have used whole grain brown rice and loved it also and yeah its a bugger if you dont get the water content correct but.......rye grain with coffee grounds is the holy grail now rye seed is ok but not ideal, grain is mush better.
The best strain IMO is a isolate of any strain in the cubensis species

Can you share any tips on using brown rice? Are the coffee grains used to inhibit clumping? Although I haven't tried it, some % of vermiculite might keep the rice from becoming a solid block. But it would take a lot!
The one time I used brown rice with significant success was when I did not fight the block forming tendancies of rice. I inoculated with LC some "blocks" in square plant tissue culture containers. The blocks were about 5 inches square and 2 or 3 inches deep. I birthed the mycelium grown blocks (they were incredibly dense and heavy) and spred them across the bottom of seedling flats.
I sometimes use ground rice and other ground grains as nutrient additive when laying out my rgs spawn.

AMEN! It took me a while to adopt this opinion. I am a bit lazy, and never clone the "best" or earliest fruit. I simply make PF cakes and clone the (sterile) in-vitro primordia. I do pick the larger ones and earlier, but IMO, a randomly chosen fruiting strain is better than using spores. Fruiting strains are so much more aggressive.
I am tempted to take cooked rice from my rice cooker and mix it with something (verm/perlite?) and then PC it. Everone talks about popped grains leading to higher contamination rates due to endospore issues. Do you find this to be true? I'm having a hard time believing that if I PC'd cooked rice that it would break out in contamination... Thanks for your thoughts...

Cold shocking is silly and it should not be preformed on cubensis at all.

I've never cold shocked, so I'm not sure.

I boil for 15 mins then change water and boil again for 10mins then change and so on over about 45 mins strain then load into jars let cool and knock em up, the frequent changing of water allows for the rice not to clump.
I use rye grain now not brown rice since I have a PC now, I use coffee grounds it add's extra nutrients and the tiny coffee grounds helps the mycelium run

I saw the below comment on an old post:
Amazonian Cold-shocking is definitely required for this one or else the mycelium will completely cover the casing and this makes watering impossible.
I thought people's ideas and theories on cold shocking had to do with contributing to the environmental transition period following incubation... But the person above it using it to slow down the mycelial growth into the casing... Instead of cold shocking, the cultures should simply be intiated earlier, right?
I tryed cold shocking a long time ago but it did not seem to do anything.

No its wrong, only some species (not cubensis) require it, cubensis is a tropical mushroom the cold will slow everything down and not help in anyway, that post is old and outdated people used to believe the would was square too you know.
A substrate should be cased once the sub is fully colonised then once mycelium pops through (3 days later) its misted then fruited.
Amazon is a cubensis strain name and means nothing at all really, it's still a cubensis just from a different area

Not that I know of.
The trick with cakes is keeping them moist.
Cakes dry out quicker than casings... and this can stunt the growth of your cubes.
Read up on the dunk and roll... AND don't expect major bulk from your cakes.
Also, save some spores in case you fuck something up... so you can try again.
Good luck.

Golden Teacher or PF Classic??? [Re: Rose]

So I picked up this print from a fellow mycologist, and according to him it was Golden Teacher (even labeled GT). However, after seeing many pictures of GTs I have to say my first flush does not resemble them much. I think this strain may be PF Classic. I defer to the experts here, what do you think?

Its gonna be hard to pick 1 particular strain out. Cubensis are so diverse, and most of them look alike anyway. I would hold on to the name GT for now.
P.s. Substrate, Genetics and environmental conditions all play roles in how a mushroom can and will look
