***EDIT*** Unexplainable failure... is there an answer to the cause? (PICS)

I have place a few cakes in the fruiting chamber on 9/30. I have 2 pf cakes, 1 straw cake. They all were birthed same day. Conditions remain 78-80 degrees, RH I believe I have been having some trouble with, I am not sure if it is my hygrometer or what. I have about 5 inches of well drained perlite in the chamber with lots of holes drilled on all 6 sides. My hygrometer is analog and I calibrated it using wet towel for an hour, set it to 99%. The RH stayed at around 100% for a few days, then one day i left the lid on crooked to allow for some more air exchange and ever since the the RH only reads at 80%. I fan and mist several times a day. So anyway my cakes have this fluff blob mycelium on it and I am wondering what the hell it is?! I have never seen this before. I am almost at two weeks and still no pins. Only this fluff http://

I'm pretty sure this is normal, especially if you dunked.
At least it's not happening INSIDE the jars...like me.

Really?
Did you by any chance also turn the jars upside down so that the cake went down, and there was a lot of space between the cake and the jar glass.
Kinda like this.

No I do not turn them upside down, but it is normal for it to shrink when it gets colonized

I am wondering as to what causes this sort of growth, or whatever it is. It seemed that it started as hyphal knots and then they turned into fluffy things rather than a fruit body.

I also had fluffy "knots" of mycellium on the top of my substrate, only mine were rye grain. I have searched and it seems to be a pretty common thing.

Yeah I have read several post on it. I was just curious what would cause this, for I have never had it happen before. I also have never gone two freakin weeks with out pins

Just trying one more time. I am thinking maybe low humidity would cause this? I was thinking my cheap hygrometer was off, but I misted heavily and got my humgrometer to read 99%. Perhaps its only because the hygrometer is wet.
Anyway, Anyone actually know the cause of the white puffs?

Hey! I'm in exactly that same situation right now. I flipped 3 pint jars that were 90-95% about 2-3 days ago and there was about a centimeter of space on top after I flipped. Now the mycelium is growing up more than out over the caked and has even got to the point where I'm growing mycelium and the inside of the surface jar- completely unattached from the actual cake! starting to get a lot of knots too. The mycelium doesn't seem to be colonizing the rest of the cake very rapidly, so I'm starting to get concerned that I'll get a lot of invitro pinning even before I get to 100%. Any advice on this situation?

I had that same problem. I got the temp down a few degrees and it seemed to slow its roll.

Yeah it's been a while since mine were colonizing, I really screwed up on the moisture content.
Some that were 85% colonized about a week ago are now fully colonized. There are others that are only 50%, and in that case I'm going to experiment a little bit, especially with casing.
I'll post results on my grow log.

Ok so now I am starting to get worried. It has been two weeks today and those fluff, puff ball things are the only sign of growth I have had... not a single pin, there appears to be minimal amounts of hyphal knots, very few and far between. Humidity may have been low for about a week, but lately I have kept it in the high 90's according to the hygrometer I don't really trust. frequent air exchanges... Anyone have any idea if any fruit bodies will even grow with all that fluffy stuff??

I've seen it before too. I think it's genetic. I think those puff balls basically are the fruits just mutated.

heh heh.... yeah... oops, it kinda got man handled
Well if it is a genetic thing, does that mean no actual fruit bodies will grow?
Also do I treat the weight of the blobs as I would the weight of actual fruits, if indeed I were to eat as is.?

Well what do they look like now? Have they grown and gotten more solid?
It depends how many sub-strains are in the cake. I had a casing of PE that grew big puff balls and normal fruits. They matured at about the same rate. The puff balls were equally potent. When I cut the puff ball in half I noticed it had almost gill like growth inside.... Yeah, they were creepy mutants but they were my creepy mutants so I ate them just the same.

The only thing I would say that actually changed is there is probly more now... I don't want puff balls... I just want normal fruits
I'm thinking i'm gonna go cut one off and try drying it perhaps....
Well I cut one off and it was definitely a solid mass. So I then proceeded to pick them all off. Maybe just maybe next flush actual fruit bodies will grow.
I'm thinking it HAS to be conditions in the fruiting chamber, because ALL the items in there had this happen, including one casing. I put some colonized rye and straw in a container outside and it grew actuall fruits.

I am keeping this thread alive yet again. I am assuming by the lack of responses to this, not much is known to why this happens. I have another bin with straw I put in the chamber about a week ago and instead of hyphal knots I have little puffs, that if they follow anything like the other ones in the chamber, they will grow to bigger puffs. This is my most devastating grow yet and there is no explanation for this even happening, and that troubles me
