dry verm layer

this is half contam half preparation technique so i decided it's better suited for here.
i finally got my hands on some ball jars and put holes in the lids for innoc. had some trouble with contam which i've never had before. it's weird. ive been sterilizing, then opening to put dry verm layer on bc i dont want it to get damp during sterilization/steaming, and then closing back up and setting in incubator.
could this be my problem? or... ive been thinking i had the incubator which is not airtight under my bed which is filthy and probably swarming with weird contam. so i used clorox wipes inside the incubator and i'm putting it up on a dresser.
it could just be the exposure to contam... but i gues MY QUESTION IS... for the lidded ball jars, which i am new at using, do you NEED a dry verm layer? if so, when do you add it? do you open the lid at all after sterilization (to put dry verm in)... im used to just open mouthed 2.5-3oz cups with which i never had a single contam problem.

You're supposed to put the dry verm layer before sterilization.
The reason is, because you don't want to open that lid after sterilization, as thousands of new contams will go inside the moment you open that lid. Once your jars are sterilized, never open the lids until they are completely colonized. That's the rule.

cool. ty stealth....
the only thing that threw me off is i used to use open mouth lids... i'd sterilize with tinfoil... then take the tinfoil off, put some more dry verm in because the sub shrinks a little... and leave the tinfoil off for more FAE...
and i never had contam. idk if i was lucky? idk

yeah, you were lucky.
you can use tinfoil also, but you're definitely not supposed to take it off without any barriers.
As far as barriers go, the more, the better.
My wife uses a dry verm layer, as well as stuffed cotton inside the inocculation hole for added security.

You said you put "some more dry verm" which indicates you already had some dry verm there... that's why you didn't get contams, the dry verm you had protected you. IMO it doesn't matter if the substrate shrinks.

Leave a half inch of space for the dry verm layer, wipe the mix off the lip of the jar, put the dry verm in to the top. Use foil to seal off steam intrusion into your jar, it will keep the dry verm dry. Don't put the jars under your bed where it's nasty, put them on a shelf or something. It does not matter one bit if light touches your colonizing jars, I promise you.

dont change the teks. the pf tek has been proven to work. if your dry verm layer is getting moist during pc then water is getting in. which can be caused by not covering the tops of your jars.
adding the dry verm layer afterwords will just risk contamination. how did you add the dry verm layer? did you strilise the verm?

put in the BRF and verm mixture
put dry later on top
cover with foil

yea. my method was for the open cups.....
brf mix, dry verm layer, cover with foil and cook
then inoc. and add more dry verm to the top of the cup because of sub. shrinkage
just set and forget
this last batch that i did, and i will keep updated with the results... process was..... fill up, with verm layer, and screw lids on. cover in foil, cook, remove foil and inoc, set and forget

ight shrinkage of the sub wont make any difference to the dry verm layer. it will redistribute itself.
also dont forget to wipe the inside lip of the jar clean. you dont want any brf on that part otherwise contaminants could grow down the sides.

getting that incubator off the floor was the key. no contam. just the occasional case of a blank shot, where either i got no spores in the jar, or maybe a poor mixture of brf to verm.... either way. most are colonized with no contam. it's nice.
i have always used brf cakes. slightly nervous about starting my next project bc ill be using wbs. it just makes mroe sense for mixing with bulk. instead of putting the cakes in a baggie and smashing them like i do. haha.
