Little Agrocybe aegerita grow (2nd flush pics)
    #9002261 - 09/29/08 11:34 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I recently grew some Agrocybe aegeritas... they came out pretty well. I used red winter wheat as spawn, and fruited them off of hardwood mulch supplemented with calcium carbonate and gypsum. I used mycobags for colonizing the mulch and fruited in a shotgun style fruiting chamber.
The flush was much smaller than I was expecting. How big do these guys usually get? I got the culture from sporeworks.

They're beautiful mushrooms! I have no idea what size they're supposed to be, but it looks like you had a good flush there. Perhaps the large number of fruits caused them to be smaller.

Stamets, GGMM: "A substantial mushroom, often up to 12 inches in diameter."

I have a half dozen cakes of hardwood mulch and rye grain similar to those pictured that I need to put in the FC...

How are they, by the way?

12 inches in diameter... that's enormous! They would bust out of my FC. They are really cool little mushies, they look really awesome when their caps are fully open. Tasty too.

Yes, the stems are really funky looking!  I'm making up some sawdust spawn for this species at the moment, and I have a small pile of hardwood logs culled from Hurricane Ike refuse sitting in my garage drying out.  I'm going to bury the logs in a bed near the end of a "wash" in my back yard.  Seeing as I live pretty close to where pioppini are found in the wild, I'm hoping to get one of those twelve inchers next summer... although I'd imagine they're nearly inedible when they get that big!

The fruits you get when you grow them on cotton seed hulls are larger.
Those are some nice stout bases you have growing, on cotton seed hulls the stems are not that robust.

Whoa, straight cotton seed hulls?  Really?  I'm going to have to give that a try!

Cotton seed hulls with grain spawn, about a pint to a gallon.
 I edited my earlier post, the stems aren't that robust with cotton seed hulls, but you get larger caps in clusters with larger numbers of mushrooms.

Here I was thinking this mushroom was a primary decomposer!  If pioppini can grow on cotton seed hulls, it can grow on a lot of substrates, right?  How do the yeilds compare to sawdust?

I'm getting a trash can filled with sugar cane bagasse in a couple of weeks.  Looks as if I'm conducting a substrate experiment.

I don't know how the yields compare to sawdust. I'd consider it a primary decomposer, because it does grow on sawdust, besides cotton seed hulls it will grow on wheat straw. It will probably grow on a lot of other substrates, the sugar cane bagasse sounds promising.

I get them at feed and grain stores in Northeast US, they don't always have them in stock, but they can order them for you. They may not available in all parts of the US. Roger Rabbit had trouble finding any a couple of years ago in the NW.

Feed stores sell them as a horse and livestock dietary supplement. They are also used as lubrication in oil drilling and as an amendment to garden soil.

Are the cotton seed hulls composted?  I can get big sacks of composted cotton seed hulls at garden centers here.  They might work better when mixed with sawdust or wood chips or something.

So does this mean Agrocybe aegerita is a secondary decomposer, or one of those either/or species like king stropharia or king oyster?

Are the cotton seed hulls composted?

Not the ones I buy.

I think  most of the primary decomposers can digest composted stuff if it sterilized.

yah the pictures i posted was either WBS or sawdust spawned to a brick of coir, im not sure if it colonized the coir or just grew around it tho

and im not 100% but i could swear these things were growing in my lawn this year, looked just like them but i never took a print to be sure, i had them growing on a old stump last year

So I've had some pioppino "cakes" of rye grain and hardwood mulch sitting around for at least a month after full colonization.  I gave them a 24 hour soak, rolled them in verm and then put them in my FC.  Now I'm reading that I've probably delayed fruiting by doing this!  Ack.

I'm beginning to think I didn't get a pioppino culture.  When I birthed the cakes, they just had a strong mushroomy odor, with that sharp, electric "bite" to it that I seem to get with freshly picked oysters.  It does have a few tan/brown patches on it, though.  I'll post pics once they start to pin, but it looks as if it'll be a couple of weeks before that happens.  Ack.
