On The Absurdity of Tipping

I think tipping is absurd, but only when it is expected. Tipping as a matter of grace is fine.
If I pay a taxi cab driver to drive me from point A to point B, and we negotiate a certain price for him to drive me that distance, then all I should have to pay is that stipulated amount. It seems ridiculous to me when the taxi cab driver expects a tip on top of the pre-negotiated price. It's like: you perform this certain service for me, I pay you for that service, and now you want more money, just because? Fuck that.
In regard to the food industry, I think it's entirely asinine that businesses don't pay waiters and waitresses what they fully deserve--an hourly wage of at least 10 dollars. Instead, employers pay food servers below minimum wage, arguing that this is all right since it's expected that the customer tip their server. This is bullshit--the employer shouldn't be asking the customer to pay more money, the employer should simply pay servers what they're worth.

I agree regarding tipping cab drivers, but tipping in the food industry is a way to encourage better customer service. Mostly, I'm sure, its simply a tradition, but I don't understand your arguments against it, because A.) Its required that, if tips do not add up to minimum wage for the hours worked, then the employer has to make the difference, and B.) If employers simply paid the waitresses more and didn't let them take tips, then the customers would still be paying more in that the prices of everything would rise.

If you negotiate a flat rate for a cab ride, there's no need to tip.
Customary tipping will always be a part of restaurant service, I wouldn't waste my time arguing about it.

I think pay per job makes more sense than pay per hour. Tipping is just pay per job, where you can pay whatever you want. Otherwise how would it work? Maybe a $5-$10 fee just to get a table?

It's an asinine policy, to be sure, but I've heard that waitresses and waiters can't survive purely on their salary by their own. Until the restaurant owners change their policies, please don't skip tipping--you're only hurting the welfare of the people who serve you your food.

Tipping at restaurants does not happen in Japan and many other countries. Japan also does not list prices that do not include sales tax (even better, the prices are usually required to be in multiples of 10).
It's sneaky and dishonest to show one price while everyone has to pay a higher one. .99 9/10 on gas prices, "convenience fees" for ticket prices only available through those convenient outlets, additional sales tax, expected tips - please just tell me what the real price is.

Yeah, such a great movie! I'd have to say I do agree with Mr. Pink, but I'm still going to tip anyways because I think most waiters/waitresses deserve it since they're being paid such a minimal income. I definitely don't tip every server; I only tip those that I think worked for it.

I tried to leave a tip at a cafe in Italy and the waiter chased me down the street to bring it back to me! He thought I accidentally left me money on the table! When I explained to him that it was gratuity he said he was paid enough. I honestly think he was insulted i tried to give him a tip!

I worked for tips for 10 years and I actually really enjoyed it.
There was something more satisfying about being payed directly from the person I was serving.
You can tell a lot about a person by how they handle money.

Yes I agree, but most conventions of earthmen are absurd. You should start a list.
