State guidelines for bus driver drug screens does not cover prescriptions [BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn.]

The Loudon County bus driver charged with DUI was apparently able to elude detection on a recent drug test because prescription drugs were not included in the testing.

So, does your school system check for prescription drugs?

A common answer you might get is, “We follow Department of Transportation regulations.”

That may sound good, but it's the most basic test and does not check for prescriptions.

Like Loudon County, we found that to be the case in Blount County for their bus drivers.

You don't need to tell a school bus driver just how important their job is.

Bus Driver Glen Wilson says, "Hey bud, you're putting your hands in a lot of people's lives. We've got a lot of responsibility on that bus to drive it."

Because of that, most drivers are drug tested...and so are the ones contracted for Blount county.

Blount County Employee Health Clinic Nurse Dianna Vermilyea says, "I currently test at least five employees a month here. We send two over to the Springbrook clinic to be tested for alcohol and drugs."

That's a pretty stringent policy for numbers of employees who are required to test at the county's employee health clinic.

But it's what they test for that may surprise you.

Vermilyea says, "DOT mandates that we test for five illegal drugs, illegal substances."

Those include, marijuana, cocaine, LSD, opiates, and amphetamines.

Vermilyea says, "Does the test check for prescription medicines? No. It tests for the five drugs that are mandated by DOT. Department of Transportation."

Vermilyea says people screened do have a form to fill out any prescriptions they are taking or they can deny listing that information.

That can make it hard to find out if a bus driver is abusing prescriptions because they don't test for them and federal rules also limit access to health information.

Vermilyea says, "The ones that we see here at the clinic are usually contractors and we do not have a medical record on them."

But not checking for prescriptions is also a surprise to even bus drivers like Glen Wilson.

Wilson says, "It's surprising to me, yeah. Usually that's the first thing they do...ask you about prescriptions."

Knox County also checks for the illegal drugs but school spokesman Russ Oakes says some prescriptions have been added to the list.
