Alcohol proof?

Hi, I'm wondering how high a proof alcohol has to be to properly sterilize something. I'm asking because I just sterilized something with bacardi rum (40% alcohol) and now I'm doubting if that did the job or not. So if anyone can tell me I'd greatly appreciate it.

Why not just use a $2 bottle of rubbing alcohol, and save the bacardi for yourself? I dont know how much alcohol is in rubbing alcohol, but it sure will sterilize!

Well it was the only thing in the house, and I'm lazy, I would think that lighter plus 40% alcohol would be fine.

The rum may leave some sugars on the objects to sterilize. If you don't have isopropyl (3 bottles for a buck by me for the 70%, buck a bottle for the 91%) then the flaming should work fine as long as you get the metal red hot and glowing.

stick with the 70%, the 91% doesn't kill germs as well because there's less water and the bacteria can form that barrier thing a lot quicker.

Good point daussaulit. 70% is better for sterilizing. I had forgotten about that.

I would think using rum would be a very bad idea. It would probably leave some traces of sugars as said before. Sugars would attract contams...
But if you flamed as well then it should be fine! Fd

I do remember reading somewhere that 70% is better at sterilizing. I can't remeber why, I know it seems backwards, but if I find the info on the net, I'll let you know.

Here are a couple of interesting links about isopropyl....One Two
From what I have read, isopropyl is actually a weak disinfectant. The second link does say this though.. "Ethyl or isopropyl alcohol in concentration of 70% to 90% are good general-use disinfectants. However, they evaporate fast and therefore have limited exposure time. They are less active against non-lipid viruses and ineffective against bacterial spores. Concentrations above 90% are less effective. "

The two links are related to sterilisation, for instruments used in surgery, where everything must be extremely sterile indeed. The reason we use alcohol is to sterilise household bacterias and germs, which im positive both the 70% and 90% alcohol is more than adequate enough to achieve

Bleach is great for sterilizing anything, as long as you rinse it off properly. I use 10% bleach in a spray bottle to sterilize my work area (can't get Lysol here).

Well, I had already used the needles by the time I posted so I was really looking for a pat on the back and an "everything's gonna be ok" from you guys. I guess I'll find out soon enough whether it'll work or not.
