barley as a substrate
    #9020997 - 10/02/08 10:11 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I used organic barley inoculated with syringe and have had decent but slow success with colonization times. Does anyone have experience with barley? and are  there any pros or cons to using barley

let me know how this works for you.    Ive been thinking about using spent grain from brewing beer to use as spawn, but  didnt know if that would take out too much of the sugars.

Barley works fine. In fact barley is what i use for all my spawn.

Soaking the barley in 50% diluted coffee helps speed up colonization.

I've had whole pint jars of barley (3/4 full) colonize in under a week when inoculated with a liquid culture.

Straight barley cased with a 50/50 mix makes quality mushrooms in my opinion.

how do i do this coffee thing? just make a pot of coffee half strong and soak the barley in the coffee for how long? do i then sterilze in my cooker? Im always interested in speeding up colonization times so any advice would help

Make half a pot of coffee. Then fill it the rest of the way up with water. You now have 50% coffee.

Soak the barley in the coffee for 12-24 hrs then strain and PC like normal.

Have you been shaking the grains up? After a jar is about 25% colonized I give it a good shake and in less than a week its usually fully colonized.

Do I need to rinse, boil, soak and then PC or just soak and strain then PC?

I use plain barley and pearled barley. Though the regular kind works a lot better than the pearled kind.

i used some of my spent homebrew barley malt in a few of the growbags i did this week.  i just substituted for some of the WBS.  i dont think its a good idea though, most of the nutes have been leached out after the mash.  BUT.  big but.
if you are brewing all-grain, after you sparge the wort out, you will be left with the spent barley, and a few gallons of half strength wort/water.  this is the same as what we make LC from.  use this wort/water to hydrate your substrate. yum.

ill let ya'll know about the barley bags as the colonize, im inoculating tomorrow.
