Goin' Big.
    #9023518 - 10/03/08 12:51 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I'm still in my first grow with one FC of 6 GT cakes, and 6 B+ cakes. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/8869117/an/0/page/0 it has taught me, and given me a better feel for growing mushrooms, I have also experienced a personal general yield amount on this amount of setup. Al-tho this project was multi-spoor, It has given me the time to get LC from good specimens to start my next project.

Not that I'm unsatisfied with what I have, cause it was a great learning experience. ...but I have decided the concept of, "Go big or go home" is the direction I wanna go into. :grin:

After searching ALL-OVER for a whole day, I ended up with nothing (Searching for a portable greenhouse, or a portable closet) I have decided to just build my own. I could have just ordered one off the net, but I enjoy a good project, and working with my hands.

Here are the supplies I picked up;

4 - 24inch zippers, some duck tape, some strapping tape ( has lil string fibers running through it) Figured it would be very strong, a drop cloth (Just for extra supplies). 2 things of 60 sec. epoxy (To apply the zippers). I plan to possibly sow them in +use the epoxy. Also 2 heavy duty shower curtains. I got a navy blue one to go in front/sides (For privacy), and a clear one to go on top, and back (To let light in) I could have saved some money and just used some painters drop cloths but, I like that the curtains are really heavy duty, and also that they are;

I got a sturdy shelving for both the structure, and the shelving. I also picked up a large squatty sterilight container for the whole apparatus to sit in, Cause I figured with all the moisture, there would be allot of water dripping out the bottom.

I have looked at a few teks on Martha's, and will install a humidifier later when my project nears ready.

Here are a few more supplies for the deed I picked up;

Pint mason jars (For the grain), 2 bricks of Coir, thermometer/Hygrometer, 5 gallon bucket (to mix/pasteurize the substrate), a quart mix/measuring-cup, small bag of WBS (Might need more) and 6 Black 12 quart dish pans (For the Bulk)I have a few more odds-n-ends laying around the house (Foil, micro-pour-tape, syringes, verm, LC, and all that good stuff)

Can any one opinion-ate anything else I might need besides the humidifier (Will get a lil later into the project) ?

cakes=slow

grains=fast

1 quart= 4 half pints

17quart  pc holds 7 quart jar= 28 half pints

doing grain gives you the ability to inoculate bulk substrates which can quadrouple the amount of shrooms you harvest.

im not saying your doin anything wrong.... just be lookin for a nice sized pc if you want to GO BIG

Hehe, yeah... good info. I mean, I'm going big, just not building a shroom lab lol... The factor of me living in an apt means its confined to a closet, ...but my project will prolly be as if I was running 4 tubs.

hey i never got bigger than a small closet....4x5x8h or more than a 18 gallon tit incubator and a 40 gallon fc.

its how u use the space available. 40 gallon tub will hold 15  to 20 cakes maybe more with a yeid of 3 g per cake thats around 60 to 80 g if everything gooes perfectly.

or u can use that same 40 gallon tub to produce 4 to 6 oz with horse or cow manure and grains.

note: these are rough yeilds but somewhat accurate

Shoeboxes, shoeboxes.

1 oz(+) avg per sterilite shoebox thing (not the real name, just donno what else to call it)

.

Get 5-10 of these going every week, you will not run out of mush. They are free at a thrift store, way way more portable than a green house, and the yield is more than respectable.  Treat them like a miniature monotub.

See where the perlite is in the shoebox thing? That's where your spawn/bulk mix should go. Make it 3-5 inch deep sub layer and it will provide all the necessary humidity, just fan it a few times a day and mist when necessary (IME once a day, good misting helps).

Blap:

You can find those sterilites at any thrift store for free, they usually have hundreds stackecd up in a back room with nowhere to put them.

Once again, do not use perlite and cakes / trays, just fill it up with spawn and bulk. It is a self sufficient tray, no humidifiers or nothin needed just substrate & a few holes.

What I meant to say was, "I wanna share some with my friends too" :wink::thumbup: in my area shrooms have only been available from 1-2 people, but all have stop growing. So they are rare, and I miss them. All my bros are like hungry lions clawing at my door, always asking when there gunna be rdy :laugh:

got a small get-togethers worth so far with my one FC of cakes. There gunna be siked.

But everyday just about, more shrooms roll in.

Hey. I am a little off topic, but I have some serious questions. I ordered my spore syringe and a spawning bag full of sterilized rye (3 lbs) with a self-healing disc to inoculate.

After the culture has colonized the bag, what would be the best way to transfer the mycelium to a larger container, and also what should I do from there(i.e.- prepare the substrate in the container? What substrate should I use? optimal casing techniques?)?

I have had some success with the PF Tek, but would like to go bigger.  I read the martha's tek, but decided to instead go with a 15 gal. rubbermaid container which I already have.

thanks

well for one, I hope you haven't knocked up that bag before you even know what your gunna do with it... there are many many many options on how, and what to do with it. The choice is totally yours (After you read up) You have some teks to read, and some learning to do.

This guys a pro;

http://forums.mycotopia.net/holding-tank/30940-faht-makes-bulk-tub.html

for the substrates used, there very optional. I'll leave the rest of the options use to you. just use the search engine to look for teks you need... Hell, you could just look around on the forums and stumble upon most of what you need to know without asking any questions. Allot of people have help-full links to teks in there sigs... Get to learnin' ! :grin:

Re: Goin' Big. [Re: nra9785]
    #9055611 - 10/09/08 07:55 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Finally got off my lazy ass and did some of it...

First I obviously put together the rack, then I took the blue shower curtain, and cut it to size (Front, and sides[all one piece]);

To temporarily keep it in place I used some zip-ties. Here are the supplies I used at this point;

Plus a sharpy

then I made measurements for the top, and back (One piece);

Cut it to size, and put it into position with some more zip-ties;

I then started off the taping with the strapping tape;

Its like that strong tape they use allot of the time for mailed packages...

Then with small pieces of tape I brought the edges together and in place starting with the curtain near the ground then 1/2 way, then just everywhere in no pattern;

Then I ran a long piece of strapping tape over the whole seam closing every gap now that it was all in place;

Cleaned it all up with duck-tape after that;

Giving it a more professional look I guess.

Then I measured off the lines where the zippers were going to run, and putting a square of duck-tape where the cut would end, to reinforce the end of the cut so it wouldn't keep tearing (Just in-case);

Take the ole' Xacto knife, and make the incision...;

In the second pic above, you can see the stress ripples stemming from the duck-tape. I BET it would have tore if it wouldn't have been for the tape reinforcing it...

Then I take the zipper, and unzip it. then apply a strip of duck-tape to it like this...;

You like that cat hair all stuck in the tape... hate those fuckers !!! anyhow...

Apply them into position;

zip'er up, and make sure she works...

I might add that I used 4 zippers in all, Cause walmart didn't carry one long enough. have 2 on each side, where one ends the next begins.

Then the other zipper side the same way...;

Now duck-tape is some miraculously strong shit... but I want something a lil stronger for, "My" project. The duck-tape alone would prolly keep the zippers in place fine... but I decided to also apply some 60 second epoxy in there too... Did this after I put the zipper in place with the tape (Obviously)...

And wallah...

After using the, "60 second epoxy" I wish I would have got the like... 5 Minuit stuff. it might have said 60 seconds, but that shit was like supper glue! You don't even have time to do a lil of the zipper, press it and make sure its seals evenly, then do a lil more, so-on-and-so-on cause the lil bit at the end of the syringe drys rock hard on ya. Luckily they put two syringe tips in the package (now I know why) I was slopping that shit around in a hurry trying not to stall, and let it dry at all. In doing this I got some in the zipper teeth at some points (Had to go in with the ole' X-acto knife and chisel it out after) Its like a mixture that when mixed creates a strong chemical reaction, and it gets hot as hell. Almost felt like it was gunna melt the curtain lol...

To Be Continued (Humidifier):regularshroom::1up::poison:

Wow, what a good idea... I'd have never thought to use shower curtains. Just a comment, when you say "And wallah..." you probably mean to say "En voilà..." It's french, and it means "here it is."

It was as if that great rush of anger had washed me clean, emptied me of hope, and, gazing up at the dark sky spangled with its signs and stars, for the first time, the first, I laid my heart open to the benign indifference of the universe. As for something inventive... It prolly wont be, But as long as it works and serves its purpose, I'll be happy :smile:. Then again, I usually get an idea to do something, then while fabricating it I implement new shit on the spot. So I never know what exactly I'll do lol.:shrug: This Martha setup isn't that huge or anything, so one humidifier will do the job.

I did however think about putting perlight down in that serilight container that I'm gunna have the Martha sitting in to catch what moisture might drip down. I figured the slow drips of moisture that falls down into the bin with the perlight would always keep the perlight hydrated. Creating a never ending cycle of the water dripping down on the perlight, then evaporating back off into the air as humidification. All the while omitting a choir of me having to soak this water up out of the serilight reservoir. This along side of a cold mist humidifier would be perfection I think...

in the area circles in red I plan on installing a small florescent light fixture under there. I seen a small one (big as I need) at home depot for like 12 bucks.

I made the top and backing on the Martha clear shower curtain to let light in. The front is blue CAUSE THE MUSHROOMS NEED THERE PRIVACY !!!:rofl: jk. If some one happened to look in there while I wasn't at home, (Apt manager/maintenance) I don't want them to automatically go SHROOOOOOOMS !

Yeh, these thoughts have ran through my head, the ONLY time they might take a closer inspection to things (Perhaps a closet)... is like once a year, and they give you a heads-up a month in advance. There by law supposed to warn you before coming in... I would have plenty of time to stop my production, unscrew 2-4 screws, and slip my cover off the shelving. the only other times they come in is like... once every 2 months to spray for pests, and change a air filter, (except I put in my own hepa filter, and told them they better not take my hepa or I would chop off there fingers) so they don't even change the filter... There has been a few times the maintenance man has just came in to do something small (Took like less then 2 mins) then left... I think I'll be safe.

I would prolly just put all my bulk pans on the ground throw a painters drop cloth over then then put all my dirty clothes over that, and I wouldn't even have to stop production. I herd of a few people on here doing that. when they come to do that yearly inspection, they never go further then to just open a closet door and look in. I truly doubt there gunna rummage through my, "Dirty" clothes. I know I'm not touching some other dudes dirty undies and shit lol...

I only work 3 days a week, so I'm home allot of the time... the maintenance man only did that once. I'm sure if I was to go raise hell, like; "STAY THE FUCK OUT OF MY APT, OR WARN ME FIRST". it would make them think I have something to hide... honestly, I don't feel unsafe, for I have changed the door knobs on my room, and my closet with keys they don't have to get into them... By law I have the right to my privacy, and I seriously doubt there gunna go breaking down my bedroom door just cause I have it locked. Obviously there gunna think I put a lock on there cause its my bedroom, its a "Private" place.

I used to get them from him through a closer friend. These are people I've known for like 10 years. Are you telling me I shouldn't have a social life, and grow shrooms at the same time ? lol.

Thats all the more reason you need to watch your ass. If one of them got busted for something dumb they might try to get a better Plea by rating you out. I've seen it happen a few times. Bragging about growing cubes is just plain stupid. This is an open forum, so before you start posting your pics of your grows, you might wanna think twice. That would be all the incriminating evidence they would need to bust your door down. The thread tittle itself will attract tons of attention. Just be careful man.

Rofl, I'm not a drug lord or something... Nor making some kind of business out of this... I have a job, and only plan to supply my self, GF, close friends on special occasions ect... Look at how many countless others report a plethora of grow logs ect, as long as I've been on this sight, there all still here. I think cops have better things to do then bust small time growers. For them to extensively investigate things like you explain I think the FBI and shit would have to have a hand in it, and thats just Rofl-tastic

By no means am I bragging, I just hope to teach some other joe how to perhaps.

Cultivating cubes is not illegal in everywhere. It is in the United States. Some of the people with grow logs don't live in the untied states. And look at the last seen date on some of those people who are from the US. Most of them havent been seen for a while :o But it's on you man. You seem pretty smart, yet not very street smart, if you know what I mean. Your friends would never have to know that you grew them yourself. You could say you bought them off AFOAF or some shit. But what do i know. I just going to grow oysters.

Some of the things you brought up aren't factors I thought about. I'll prolly just put my "illegal" projects to rest. I don't wanna go to prison by any means. I first came to this sight to get high, but to grow these mushrooms you must first learn a lil mycology. At least thats what I'm getting out of it. The mycology is what keeps this hobby alive for me. Perhaps I'll just keep my grows and hobby's, "legal" with some edibles.

Hmmm. well locks are your friend. This way they have to ask you to gain access to the closet. I wouldn't even post pictures of something that big (if it's full of shrooms) on the internet, period. I just put a few pics up of little projects because I can't brag about it to people in real life. Other than that it's no one's concern.  My shrooms come from out of state :stoned:

I feel ya. My intents were to show/teach others how to, and share what I thought were, "good ideas".

Also, to be exact, they would have to gain access to my room, then to my closet too lol...

By the way The Shroomy 1, I think I'm gunna steal your humidifier setup ! :grin: I already have a fog element like the one you use, and I have a few computer fans also. all I gotta do is buy a sterilight container, and a few plumbing fittings. Does the one in your gallery (instant_monotub_tek ) put out allot of humidity or is that sufficient for only one tub ?

Why would you stop doing something you enjoy because of what other people think? Everyone sees the potential legal trouble with doing what they do.. especially with mushrooms that takes a month of thinking about the reprocutions before you even get results..  We all know it is not very wise to tell anyone about our operations; however, it is the right of the individual to tell whomever they trust with the information. Personally.. i told a select few of my closest friends.. all of whom i would trust with my life.. and all of whom tripp mushrooms with me...  I especially hate it when people get all preachy.. just because they dont have someone that they could trust unconditionally.. or whatever the fuck sparked that tangent..

and the fact of the matter is that the police dont go around tapping everyones computers to see what kind of illegal actions they may or may not be taking part in. They have the ability to, but to think that they would spend valuable time and resources trolling the web for every would-be pot or mushroom grower is just stupid. If so.. everyone on this message board, since its conception would be charged with conspiracy.. and dont kid yourself... there's ways to trace through proxys..

let the man be proud of his hard work and ingenuity.. :thumbup:

Ok, this idea for humidification was stolen from The Shroomy 1, and I implemented a filter basically... all thanks to Shroomy 1. :thanx:

The basic humidification comes from a fog element that I purchased for;

Heres some various shots of it before I added the weather stripping seal for the lid.;

Applied weather stripping;

Add water and close'er up...

This is with just the fog element turned on, (No fan)

Then let the fan rip.

I tested it in the Martha. I placed the Hygrometer/thermometer gage at the VERY top, and the digital hygrometer near the middle. Then turned the home-made humidifier on, and let it run for about 30 mins before checking on it. came back and the gages read about 65% humidity, but the digital read 97%.

Then it dawned on me that humidity goes down, condensing in lower positions. so I put the gages with the digital at the middle (Not the complete bottom), and they both read around 90% after about 10 mins, and I think they were still on the rise, cause I released alot of humidity when i opened to get the gage at the top. Since befor the digital read 97%

I'll add that the whole thing was pretty much filled with a thick fog, and condensation was forming on everything inside. :thumbup:

Again, very nice construction, though I personally don't know if this would be good, or what "dose" to use. I'll be interested to hear what more experienced people have to say.

The monotub is just so easy. Nothing to build.

I have found bags to yield better and larger fruits, faster than waiting for grain to colonize, then the bulk, just to get to fruit. and its about 25% of the workload as any other tek, no fanning, no misting, no shaking, no touching no breathing... they just work great IMO

leave out the coffee... its not that great as an additive, tho everyone else will say different (read the title)
there is almost TOO MUCH nitrogen in spent coffee grounds, and Nitrogen is the reason everyone uses them, so if your going to use it, only use it in a 0.5% or so

Yeah same thing with grains wait 24 hours.. Im just not to good at getting the field capacity just right with bulk subs.  My first 2 mono's stalled due to that reason..  My outlook is "Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained"

Uh, no grains are soaked for 24 hours simply to hydrate them, nothing to do with field capacity, if that even exists as a term in Grain spawn.
you let it all sit together all mixed up for 24 hours for 2 things.
1. to allow the contaminate spores time to germinate out, so they die in the PC instead of surviving.
2. equalize water thru out the substrate while fully hydrating all ingredients

Just an update, The home-made humidifier successfully keeps the whole Martha just shy of 100%. Works for me... I Actually prefer it cause its so simple. Just a tank with a fog element and a fan. Also, I only have to fill it once every 2 days.

You might want to try and isolate your fan from the moisture within the reservoir tank. I have used a setup very similar to yours and the fan would get very wet from the mist. It rusted right up and stopped working eventually.

Cheers

I don't think you have to worry about getting busted via the internet, at least not yet.  Depends on what provider you have (AT&T = teh lose) and how well you protect your privacy (check out the security section of this forum/site).  I've honestly never heard of anyone getting busted through what they've posted online.  There's probably enough information on here to put certain parties away for a long time if the law so wished, but I don't think enough invasive infrastructure and isp corruption exists yet to connect the dots.  Maybe in a few years, but not yet.

What I would worry about is the fact that multiple people are aware of your endeavor.  Close friends might be an exception, but even a close friend, when bent over by the long arm of the law may do some unexpected things.  Just be careful.

I do look forward to the end product, it looks very promising.

My Internet runs through like 3 fire-walls before it gets to my comp (Charter). Modem, router, and the Microsoft security center on your comp. I think someone would have a hard time hacking into my comp, unless the cops go around promoting stuff on the internet for you to DL, and get a key-logger, or some kind of virus so they can have there way with your comp, which I HIGHLY doubt... That in it self sounds illegal... (Invasion of privacy?) That added with the fact, every one knows that everything they see on the Internet MUST be real (Sarcastic) A few pictures posted online isn't enough to have the cops beating down the door IMO. I feel for something like that to happen, I would have to live in a city with a HUGE police force, like that of a well known city (NY,LA,etc) I live in a city with about 5 cops :rofl: At most, if they got wind of it, would have them sitting down the road watching my APT. Prolly just looking for people going in and out of my apt to determine if I'm dealing drugs or something. The traffic in and out of my apt consists of me and my gf, and perhaps 1-2 friends once a month. That sounds like one hardcore dealer to me !!! (Sarcastic) When this thread went into people telling me to watch out and shit, I was a lil stressed out, cause I never really factored in the stuff there saying by mingling on this sight. Now, I don't sweat it, cause I now realize how bogus it is. Thanks for your support in letting me know y'all too think its just a load of crap, but like I said, "I'm not sweating it".
