Is this an exact science?
    #902307 - 09/23/02 07:46 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I've lately been wondering if mixing BRF, verm and water together for the cultivation of mushrooms is a science that has to followed exactly or is somthing that as long as it is followed with a good understanding of whats going on is kind of like drawing inside the lines. Does the amount of water need to be EXACT? and what is exact? a little over a quarter of a cup is not exact, but is it exact-enough?

Yes and no. There is some "play" in the recipies, but for the most part, they were developed after much trial and error. I recommend you stick with the proven formulas if you care about success.

Im pretty sure a little leeway is allowed. There ought to be a margin of tolerance that wont spell failure, but simply less than ideal conditions. I used whole wheat flour, 9 ounce drinking glasses, fine verm. This is pretty close to the Tek and as long as theres no contams ill be fine

All brands of BRF are going to be a little different.

All brands of Vermiculite are going to be a little different.

All brands of water are going to be a little different (okay, maybe not).

Therefore, the mixtures are going to vary a little bit depending on what variety/brand you are using. I started with several jars with the same amount of water, several with more, and several with less than what is printed in the MMGG. This way I could find out exactly what I needed to get the best results.

So you can change the formulas, although I wouldn't stray too far, and I would keep track of what you change so you can find out what works best for you.

Check this out:

With this tek you don?t have to guesstimate the water amount.
