To Dunk or to....

Viewing my colonizing substrate cakes through a layer of glass I can tell which substrates look moist and which look as thogh they are sopping wet. Although I have these two distinctions I still dont know with the simply moist ones if simply moist is enough for the remainder of the cakes life once its out of incubation and thrown into fruiting.
I am tempted to dunk all the cakes, including the soppingly wet ones as soon as they come out of their glass jars just to make sure they have what it takes.
However I am worried that I will over hydrate some of the cakes and will have to watch them die.
My questions are:
How do I know if my cakes need to be dunked before they begin fruiting?

Is it safe to dunk all cakes without taking into concern the present moisture content?

What are the dangers of dunking an already plentifuly moist cake.

these are the simple questions I need answers for.

Go ahead and dunk them. It seems that it helps to increase flush size. The cakes that are already at full moisture capacity won't absorb any more water during the dunk, but I doubt the dunking process would hurt them.

I agree with Mickey, but I can see why you would want to refrain from dunking them. Fanaticus.com descibes an inner reservoir tek that I haven't tried yet but that I would think would work great, check it out! fanaticus.com/resevoir.htm But of course Mickey is right, a fully colonized cake should have no problem with contamination from being dunked overnight.

I agree as well. Also, I know that if you don't dunk for more than 12 hours, then the cake (if fully colonized!) will not absorb any more water than it can. So I say, if you dunk them all, just do it for 12 hours max, that will keep you in the green. Most commercial growers flood their casing trays prior to the first flush to increase cropping. Also, between flushes, the flood is repeated. I would also say that you should dunk each seperately, to avoid a possible cross-contamination. Dude, Im stoned and rambling, but I hope that helps!
