Rye probs..
    #901719 - 09/23/02 12:20 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Each time I try to make a rye jar, it's contaminates... here is how I do it:
I let the rye soak overnight in botteled water
I simmer it for 20-30 minutes until its swell up nicely
I put the rye in a quart jar, put a vermiculite layer, put aluminium on the top with the lid unscrewed, and sterelise for about 30 minutes..
Some of the berries burst during this.. could this be the cause?? help me!
thanx!

Any seed or grain must be pressure cooked at least 60 minites @ 15 pounds pressure. Grains or seeds contain endospores & it takes that to kill them off.

No verm is needed.

Simply soak, rinse, drain WELL, & fill jars 3/4 full. Add internal filter disk or fitter material & lid with a 1/4 hole in it, cover lid & top of jar with tinfoil or rubber band on double coffee filters & PC -- as directed.

Let PC cool -- some, open while still warm, remove jars & shake to insure no lumps.

Store jars in a warn, clean, dark & dry place untill jars are cooled to room temp. Then do "whatever" with them.

6T

There is no way to generate the same heat levels by boiling water at normal atmospheric pressure.  The pressure maintained by a pressure cooker raises the boiling point of water which in turn increases the maximum temperature reached.  If you've had success with grain by boiling the jars, consider yourself very lucky...

Peace

I think it would be far easier and more reliable to find an odd job (such as cutting a yard) and using that money to buy a used PC instead of trying the above..
