Peat moss casing help
    #9019899 - 10/02/08 07:05 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I had a fried give me some advice on casing. He told me to use just plain peat moss pasteurized in layers with my mycellium. I did it PM/MYC/PM/MYC/PM in a sterile container. It has been about a week now and i can see some rhyzomorphic mycellium going into the peat moss on the sides.

When should i induce fruiting?

What should be my optimal temp for fastest mycellium growth?

Am i in trouble because i didnt use anything else with the PM in terms of its ph and water content?

He meant layering your substrate and mycelium. Colonizing all that casing, which isn't nutritious, is just going to waste your mycelium's limited energy. Because it's already been a week and would most likely be a waste to separate the two, just take it as a lesson learned. Casing goes on top, bulk sub can be layered, although I prefer to mix it together and keep some mycelium on the top to fight contam.

You can start fruiting when you see about 25% of more poking up through the casing.  Yes you should have soaked the peatmoss but you are still fine, just mist it thoroughly and keep it wet.  Be gentile with indirect misting the colonized areas though.

You want temps around 70-75f for colonization.  Anything above starts getting riskier.

You will do fine without ph adjustment, dont worry.

Evolution is Lamarckism in disguise.  Adaptation never creates a new species or trait, but rather the new species/trait always existed within the parent DNA until circumstances allowed it to be activated.  For instance, every wolf has the DNA for poodles, but that DNA would never be revealed without man selectively breeding for it.

so should i use my uncolonized substrate then the mycel. and then the peat moss?

what's your spawn? grain?  if so yeah use substrate for the layers then once thats all fully colonised then case it in the peatmoss and verm then once it starts poking through then initiate fruiting

No it will still work, once you see myc poking through the top layer of casing you can go ahead and fruit it.

horses manure sure, leave the cow manure behind its too hard and its not worth the effort, grab the horse poo with white flecks all over it and make sure its aged not fresh or semi fresh you want the poo thats been sun dried and rained on for the past few months, then add some coir verm and gypsum and wala you have you self some grade a shiat sub.

so i can walk to the neighbors ask to grab some poo from their horse field? I then have to pasteurize it right? 160 deg for an hour or so?

yeah that's right, but if the poo is not aged and does not look white to grey and or have white flecks, you may have to leach it also, but try to avoid that by picking the correct poo poos, then just break up mix in your other stuff like gypsum verm whatever you want and then do the pillowcase/cooler job

ok so here is my little project. I am finally seeing results. There is some mycellium growing through the top layer of peat moss (PM). Any suggestions when to fruit?

Here is the peat moss from the top and sides

alot of the white you see is condensation on the side of the container. but a fair amount is strands of mycellium growing through the peat moss.

The friend who suggested this whole set up told me to take the colonized peatmoss out of the container and place it on a grate in a fruiting chamber to allow the fruits to grow three dimensionally.
any suggestions?
