Deer Hunting
    #9012620 - 10/01/08 09:56 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I'm somewhat new to the sport so I'm still in the process of learning how to read the deer and understand their habits.

Bow season starts this Saturday in my state so I've been practicing and getting my gear together. Oh yeah, a new Bass Pro Shop just opened in my area so I'll definitely have to stop by there as well.

Does anyone else here hunt?

I'm in VA where plenty of people hunt, but I read that the white tail deer population is much greater now than it was around native american times. I guess that's because all the crop fields we've planted give them a hardy food supply that they thrive on. They're overpopulated in several states so get out there and take a few!

Also I might add, I've never actually killed a deer yet. I've been hunting the past two seasons and seen a few that were within range but I passed them up waiting for that big buck (who never showed up).
This season my dad and I plan to take at least two deer even if they're does because times are tight and a single deer provides tons of meat. But I'm a little nervous about killing such a graceful animal. I think I'll feel sad but I know its for a good reason.

I've never hunted deer but I'd definitely give it a try.

Pris, if season is still open when I'm home, I'll help ya take care of that deer problem.

One thing I've wondered: is it legal to hunt deer with an assault rifle?

Funny you mention that. There have been a few ecology studies that have shown that tick population is proportional to deer population. The more deer in an area, the more ticks in that area.

I witnessed this first hand last time I was home in GA. Before my parent's area exploded with housing developments, people hunted the deer pretty regularly. Hearing a 30-06 shot in the fall was pretty common.

Now that the area has blown up, people can only hunt with bows (can't use firearms within 500 yards of a road). That means less people are hunting and the deer numbers are getting out of control... as are the tick numbers. I went hiking for about 3 hours over the summer and came out of the woods with nine ticks. When deer were hunted regularly I'd get 1 or 2 on a bad day.

So keep up the hunting, you're in inadvertently helping keep the tick population down, which keeps occurrences of Lyme's Disease down.

I knew you were in VA as soon as you mentioned something about a new Bass Pro Shops opening near you. I just saw about it on the news yesterday. Hanover county, right?

I need to plan a trip up there as the only ones I've been to were in Nashville TN, Baltimore MD and Orlando FL.

I figure the more of those stores you go to, the better a person you are. They are so fucking awesome.

Yeah this was the first one I'd been to and it's pretty sick. Ponds and fountains, huge fish tanks, cool taxidermy all over the place, its nice. I got a pair of thermal waterproof gloves and a $5 Bass Pro Richmond T-shirt haha. Tonight is actually the grand opening where they'll have nascar drivers and pro hunters. I'm not too interested in that but they did have a few booths in the parking lot where they were giving out free stuff. Got a free toyota camo hat, fishing lures, and can coolie.
