Intersting title. While, admittedly, I haven't dug up the papers, I don't see how this guy's findings relate to the economic crisis. Rather, they seem to support the general idea of herd mentality.

In times of crisis, people pool together for support and look for a leader to show the way out.
Is it any surprise this crisis came up 6 weeks before the elections?

I wouldn't want to trade against the herd. Not even Buffet can compete with that kind of buying/selling power.

No, it's not exactly what he does. He may not trade with the herd, but he doesn't trade against it. His investing philosophy is value investing. If the fundamentals aren't there, then there's no value to invest in. It is possible that herd mentality can devalue a fundamentally strong company, in which case he might invest in it. Preferably when the herd stops devaluing that company.
He does have a lot of influence. Might even say he's a shepherd, but he doesn't control all the sheep.
