quality of isolated strain?
    #8993112 - 09/27/08 11:07 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

I was wondering if an isolated strain that is cottony-white mycelium instead of rhizomorphic is worth keeping, or if it will simply perform badly.

The reason I ask is because I had a cake of rye that became contaminated, but the mycelium fought off the contamination and produced fruits anyhow.  So I cloned one of the fruits thinking it may be naturally contam-resistant.

Interestingly, there have been a couple of petri dishes (I made about 6) that got spots of bacteria in them, which the mycelium simply consumed; there's also one dish that got black mold growing in it, and is not about 1.4cm in diameter, but the mycelium is actually growing over top of the mold.  Sadly, though, its all fluffy-white and not rhizomorphic at all.

So is this something worth keeping?  How well would such a strain fruit?

This thread was moved from Advanced Mycology.

Reason:
Chances are the 'mycelium' growing over the black mold is actually mold mycelium.  Cubensis won't overtake mold, nor will most other mushroom species. By evolutionary design, conidial species will gain the upper hand over non-conidial species, especially in sterile media.

Not an advanced topic.  I'll move this to mushroom cultivation for you.

I've seen G. lucidum overtake and cover mould on agar several times.

G lucidum and the oyster mushrooms will overtake mold in petri dishes, but most people in this forum are growing cubes, thus I tend to direct advice based on that unless otherwise specified.

Note above, I said 'most other species' to avoid typing what I've already said a few hundred times in other threads.

no its most definitely cubensis mycelium grown from a culture sample.  the big black spot must not be mold then, but something else.  I assumed mold b/c the agar I'm using contains anti-biotics.  However, the mycelium is very clearly heavily rhizomorphic growing cleanly off the tissue sample, and also growing over top of a black contamination spot ~1.4cm in diameter.
