first cake
    #900361 - 09/22/02 11:24 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I just removed my first fully colonized cake from the jar(1/2 pint). I put it in a round tupperware container about 2.5 times as wide and 3 times as high as the cake. For humidity, I just took the container in the shower where it was nice and steamy and left it open for about five minutes(there is plenty of moisture, but is this a bad idea for any reason?) Anyways, my main question is when should I start seeing pinning if everything was done correctly and is there anything I should change?

i could see the shower thing being a problem because of airborne contams entering via the water vapour (steam). Especially since the shower is a breeding ground for bacteria... on the walls, the curtain, your body. I always assumed that's why it calls for a water/hydrogen peroxide mixture when misting your habitats. btw... i could be completely wrong.. i'm planning on humidifying with a mug or small cup of boiling water in the aquarium/container.

I thought that once the cake fully colonizes, it will fight off the bacteria. If not, then the shower thing definetly doesn't seem like a good idea.....

Are you doing this on a daily basis? You can't just humidify once and forget about it, you have to maintan the humidity in your terrarium. Perlite is the easiest method.

Bathroom is a horrible place to do such a thing . Come up with better method like misting inside of container .

I agree..you might not want to get naked with your cakes...instead why not try just injecting it with ten cc's of water every four days or so ...but I want to try boiling out the alcohol in beer and then injecting with that..once it is cool ..that sounds like a tempting idea doesnt it?.

Well, I definetly think the shower thing gives the cake sufficient humidity, as I can see the percipitation on the sides of the container. However, its been 24 hours and I still have not seen any pinning yet. Doesn't pinning usually start pretty quickly?

Haha, well I don't actually shower with it....i just take the cake in after I shower when it is steamy and let it sit for about 30 seconds. Seems to do the job as there is plenty of percipitation on the sides of the container. One of these days I'm gonna build a real terranium and use a fish tank bubbler. I'm just waiting to have more than one cake when I do. When should I start seeing pinning as its been about 36 hours now and there is not one sign of it yet.
