Matsis, Gypsys, Chanties, Honeys and others

Figured the recent weather would have the matsis flushing so I made it up to check things out and try to figure out how to find them .  they're definitely coming on, checked several spots from 2200' to 6100' and found a few at nearly all of them but it was very hit or miss. still the best I've done hunting them though.  gypsys are not as abundant as they were last year but still easy to find.  white chants flushed alright but are winding down already I think, many past prime...

was back in the woods the whole time, there wasn't much to see but trees and mushrooms ...

Matsutake, Tricholoma magnivelare

Gypsy mushrooms, Rozites caperata

Honey mushrooms, Armillaria mellea

White Chants, Cantharellus subalbidus

Lyophyllum decastes

Hydnellum peckii

Amanita

Catathalesma sp., matsi lookalikes

Russulas

Leccinum sp. I think

do the mushrooms generally work there way up in elevation as the season progresses? or does it vary according to genus? I never know if I should be looking higher up the slopes of mountains.  instinct tells me they would start fruiting at higher elevations first.  I dunno

yeah, I'd say, as a general rule, spring mushrooms start low and move up, fall ones start high and move down.

the fully opened matsis were found around 6100', the others were lower...

Excellent imagery, I enjoyed those pics! What do those matsutake taste like? Somewhat like blewits? And do the white chantherelles have the same fruity smell and slightly peppery taste as the yellow ones? I've never had the chance to try either species!

never tried blewits.  matsis taste, well, like matsis, heh.  I dunno how else to describe it.  they have that strange spicy smell you will only know if you get the chance to smell one.  first time I found them I took one whiff and knew exactly what I had...  still working on finding good recipes for em, but I threw some in chicken broth, made some rice with it and it turned out pretty awesome.  the whole pot of rice had the matsi flavor/smell.  they're really tough, chewy mushrooms though so you gotta cut em up small and cook them well...

White chants are alright, they seem more bland than the yellows to me.  but they're more common, at least where I hunt, and they get bigger, on average.  gypsys were also surprisingly good when I tried them last year, I thought they were just as good as chants...
