    #899641 - 09/22/02 03:41 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

i was wondering if its enough to just put cakes in a small tupperware box with wet perlite in the bottom? i have no sort of terrarium or heating/humidification setup. i need to know if this is enough and jsut put it aside. also, how wet does the perlite need to be?

just make sure that where ever you put the box is a few degrees cooler than where you incubated them. give the perlite all that it will absorb.
you'll be fine

um, i dont think perlite absorbs water.

just put your perlite in a strainer and run water through it all, then let it drip a little and put it in your terrerium. If you notice the humidity going down a little just give the perlite a little bit of water.

As long as you can see no standing pools of water, your perlite is not too wet. Bascially if you have 3/4 of an inch of perlite, 1/4-1/2 of an inch of water is good.

Yeah perlite definatly soaks up water   It also wicks the water easily to whatever it touches.  I wouldn't recomend setting cakes directly on the perlite.  You will only get one or two flushes that way before the cake gets waterlogged.  Best to set them in a jar lid ( I fill mine with wet vermiculite) and set on the perlite.  I would also mist the sides of your container daily when giving air exchange this will help keep the humidity up.

Peace  ignuF
