Shroom smell!?

Before growing Ive never done shrooms, so somehting like the smell is somehting I know nothing about. My shrooms, the dryer they get, seem to start smelling. I have some that have been drying for about 2 or 3 days, and they smell a bit musty. And some that have been drying for two, that also are starting to smell a bit musty.

I cant really explain the smell, but its there, and Im just wondering if the smell is normal for dried mushrooms. They dont smell like when fresh, I can say that much!

This is normal, dried shrooms smell (and taste) very strongly of musty, mushroomy goodness. As long as they don't appear to mold or rot they're probably fine.

goodness? heheh i hate the taste of shrooms, but thats just me...
the mushrooms have a strong mushroomy smell to them, if you have a mushroom in your backyard and smell it, you'll know what i mean...
Oh and if it has a strong sour smell, chuck it, its bacteria contaminated

Well, I cant say as its a sour odor. More of a thick one thats not too bad at all, but if it whee more strong could be very pungent. Its hard to explain smells.

The only thing I see on the shrooms, is some blueness coming in. Not a growth, but the stems are turning a light shade of blue, but I hear thats okay, as its caused by oxidization....

I'm sure you're fine. As a matter of course, shrooms smell funky as shit. But as long as you don;t pick up anything other than the mushroom funk (along with maybe a little must from drying) you're cool

Ive just got ONE more question, not pertaining to the smell, but the dryness level. Now, I havent used any desiccant at all, Ive just been drying with a 50 cfm bathroom fan for about 3 days. Now to break a stem, its not exactly 'cracker dry'. On a lot of them it is, but on some its not like just a snap, but it bends a bit before it snaps.

I take it these are still obviously a bit wet, but do you think with another 12-24 hours of faning, they will be ready to be bagged?

they can certainly be bagged, but the best method is still to dry them with a dissicant. Air contains about 50-60% RH, which makes it difficult to completely dry your shrooms with, esp. if you dry them with cold air. Even if your shrooms look dry, they are not totally dry, which affects the potency/weigh ratio, as water *is* heavy. Otherwise, if you are not planning to keep them for years, it doesn't matter that much.

Well, my stems are too small to squeeze. I cut them lengthwise, and in half, so theyre pretty small. Like toothpicks. So squeezing them in between two figures does nothing.

However to hold it between my thumb and middle finger, when only applying a little pressure with my index figure the stem snaps. I take it thats pretty damn dry.

And I was wondering. I know you always see silica gel in those little packets they stuff in shoes and stuff, but where could you buy pre-made packets like that? I know a tub is simple to get, but do you think any stores would sell pre packed little silica packages?

That way I could sperate them into a few bags, each with a silica packet. That way I dont have to worry about the loose gel getting eaten accidentally, and making someone sick! Just an idea....

well, then you either shit in your jars or they are contaminated. they should only smell like fresh mushrooms.
