this is one of the most promising fields of science. i really hope people recognize the benefits of this treatment and stop letting the whole "fetus" thing cloud their judgement.

I think the same thing bottom line is this sort of thing could help 10s of millions of people almost immediately with all types of different conditions this religious ass nation is holding us back with things such as this.

Please describe what this "religious ass nation" is doing to wrongfully prevent stem cell therapy advances?

He didn't say wrongfully prevent, he said it's holding you back. Which is true. Stem cell research is deliberately underfunded in the US since Bush took office.

the irony is u don't even have to abort fetus' to get them. stem cells can be donated from the umbilical chord after birth.

the irony is that with enough research, we wouldn't even need to harvest them from people. we could clone them.

The irony is that thousands of stem cells are discarded every month due to women undergoing IVF treatment. But you can't use them in America.
Actually that's not ironic, I just wanted to fit in

as you've sort of conceded already, you can use them in america.
I suspect the problem is more funding the research and getting the rights to the cells, though I'm sure they'll do what they always do and just refuse to provide care or treatment to you unless you sign away your rights to whatever body parts they decide to remove, and if you can't consent, they just take your bits and pieces and sell them anyways- giving you none of the profit.

Nope, at the moment, unused human embryos are discarded. Taking stem cells from them is banned, as is funding on research that uses human embryonic stem cells (Federal funding; California is able to fund its own research).

They may be discarded as a matter of course, but so what?
Are you asserting that their is some prohibition on using them? You have a source for that if so?
My understanding is that federal funds are not available for research using various stem cell sources (like embryonic and fetal) and the states, as always, are free to do what they like with what money the feds don't take from their citizens and grant back to them with restrictive limitations and unequal/unwise distributions.

Well, the biggest research funding body by far is the NIH, so any restrictions on what they can fund is a serious matter. There's been a ban on the production of new ES cell lines since Bush took office; they can only use existing (contaminated) lines. Other countries don't have this limitation. I'm a bit unsure of the details beyond that, sorry.
