Mushroom I.D. anyone?
    #899254 - 09/22/02 12:35 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

These specimens are growing in my driveway. Mid Atlantic blue chip with crush and run base is the habitat! They seem to grow right on the surface of the crush and run packed dust. I can?t even dig with a small tool to get under them easily.

As you can see, these are brown centered, fading to tan or lighter brown towards the edge. The younger ones start with a bit of a peak but the mature ones seem to lose the peak in the center.

Sizes range from 1/4" to 1-1/2" in diameter on the caps and they stand 3/4" to 2" high. Stems up to 3/16" diameter growing fatter near the bottom. Stems look a little tiger striped to me. The stems snap very easily but fragment somewhat when you do. The stem appears hollow when cut down the center.

The gills do not look attached to me but I am a newbie to this. The gills are dark brown to almost a dark chocolate. The spore print looks black to me but could be an extremely dark brown.

Bruising not immediately detectable but I squished some stem fragments between my fingers and they did turn much darker brown over time.

Any love on these?

Peace

Those are Psathyrella velutina, they're not active. Seems like people have been finding a lot of those lately.

Thanks for the feedback and reading my post.

I'm collecting quite a dossier of the fungus on my property already!
