Even if he didn't want to look at Obama for the sake of camera angles and the audience, I really think the fact that he wouldn't engage with the majority of Obama's points (expecially those directed specifically at him) hurt him in the debate.

McCain was much more visibly emotional the whole time, and there was one point in particular when he struggled to not cry, whereas Obama was much more calm, cool, and collected. All in all, McCain didn't really suck, but he certainly was not the one holding the edge over the other, which really isn't a good sign for his campaign, considering that this was to be his area of expertise and Obama held his own and then some. McCain really needed more than that, and his best attempts to jab Obama blew up in his face.

I know the part that you're talking about, where he started to get teary eyed.  I thought that he was intentionally trying to show the public that he cared so much for them, that it brought him to tears.  It would have been great if he had actually been able to shed a single tear (and thereby making it hard for Obama to defend the accusations that he had just made against him).  Instead Obama cut through the bullshit and slammed his ass.  I think I cheered.

One thing I've read over and over in post-debate commentary is how calm and NON-angry McCain's demeanor was. Even many partisan McCain fans were concerned he might steam some, depending on Obama's approach. You are the very first commenter I've come across who claims the opposite.

You really do see the world through Kos-colored glasses.

I have some psychological training, and I can tell you that he started the debate very nervous, and ended the debate feeling a high level of anxiety.  I didn't catch any signs of anger though.

I agree he didn't seem angry at all, but he did seem unsettled.  Every time Obama made a major point against him, McCain broke out in a stiff grimacing smile.  If that smile was amusement at Obama's naivetee, then he'd have responded by handing Obama's ass right back to him on those points.  But he didn't, which makes it seem like he really had no ground to stand on and the grimacing smile was his defense against letting his nervous tension overtake him.

My psychological training says Obama was looking pretty anxious, too. Sweaty, even.

He looked much more relaxed than Obama, that's for sure.

Reading comprehension, man, reading comprehension.

I said you're the first commenter I've run across who said he looked angry.

And of course, Obama definitely looked off balance and ill at ease for a lot of the debate - particularly as it wore on. I will give him props for dialing his stuttering and stammering way back, though.

And that little video summarizes everything wrong with McCain's (and most Republicans) foreign policy.

I could have done without all the emotional blathering involving bracelets and who loves dead soldiers more from both sides.

A commentator from Russia Today, referencing the hard lines both candidates took towards Georgia:

“Russia is being turned into a whipping boy to hide the fact that the US has overreached itself and is not a positive force for change in the world.”
