buying shoes yesterday...

i was also looking for insoles. i asked the prices of the insole models they had on the shelf and was given a brief summary of each model's specialty. the leather ones i was told make your feet breathe. i'm sure you've all heard that before, that leather makes your feet breathe.
my feet have no breathing organs. my feet have no lungs. wrapping them into a few kilos of goretex or fake leather and sticking a small swath of leather between the sole of my foot and two inches of hard rubber ain't gonna make my feet breathe better.
breathing feet.
by what alchemical reaction do my feet start breathing when in contact with a few strips of leather?
what are these fucking idiots thinking?

They were, quite possibly, referring to the fact that the skin of your feet, like all skin, consists of pores that can transpire water, and to refer to allowing one's feet to breathe means to allow air and moisture to pass through easily. Apparently you were unaware that the word "breathe" has several definitions, and perhaps spending some time with Lady Dictionary will help alleviate this. I'm curious as to what you were thinking when you decided to post this thread in Philosophy & Spirituality, as it clearly has nothing to do with this forum.

my goodness, do you really think i'm that much of a simpleton? i suppose a reply like this is what you get when you expect too much of your readers.
it's called humor by the way.
one of the philosophical aspects of the post is a joke for philosophy of language. it's a play with abstract and concrete meaning. there's also a play with vagueness of language, which is the basis of many Far Side comics that philosophy and logic professors love using in class. should i even have to explain this? i assumed it wouldn't have to come to this, but once again i'm reminded that i am at the shroomery after all.

You might refer to your attempt as "humor", but humor it most certainly was not.

Well, as long as you're self-satisfied, that is all that matters.

If you start asking these kinds of questions you could get yourself in a lot of trouble. I suggest checking out what's on TV.

I was a shoe salesman myself once.
People are under the false impression that all shoe salespeople go to shoecollege and know everything about ever make and type of shoe that there possibly is to know.
Most people who are hired to sell shoes know nothing about shoes, are not shoe specialists and get so tired of being asked questions that they arent possibly going to know the answer to that they make something up.

yes, we just make it up as we go along, go with the flow to avoid doing too much work, or figure out clever answers that seem to trick most customers/clients/coworkers into thinking we should keep our jobs.
i'm amazed that companies and most institutions keep together. social structures are strong, if they weren't all of us--being the incompetent fools we are--would be fired. oh dear, what does god think of all this?

I think most people actually aspire to some form of excellence. But the jobs require that you be incompetent to some degree and often a lot. I'm not kidding here as I have repeatedly experienced this in my workplaces.
So we endeavor to excel at goofing off and getting out of working hard while pretending we are working hard. It's a good way to survive in the modern workplace.

My only point is this: If shoe sales people had a college education they wouldnt be selling shoes.
