Forcing WAN IP change with a DHCP server
    #8995175 - 09/27/08 06:35 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Windows XP

I tried hooking directly to the (wireless) modem, changing the mac address, and powering up after restart.  But that didn't work like it has in the past.

I tried ipconfig /release, /renew; repair connection

I tried calling my ISP (won't help a brother out, the cheap bastards).

Any more ideas?

well, your WAN IP is the connection to your ISP, while DHCP is the technology that your router uses to assign LAN IP's, or IP addresses across your local network.  Some ISP do dynamic addressing, but most do not.  What kind of service do you have?  I have cable, and my WAN IP has stayed the same for months..

Why do you need to change your WAN IP address?

peace

My ADSL IP address changes if I leave the modem off for a certain amount of time - I heard 20 minutes,  but I'm sure it's changed after just a few minutes of a power outage. It depends on your ISP.

My ISP is Clearwire at the moment.  The man on the phone specifically said that the internet is not set up for a static ip, and that it should change after the lease time is up (it hasn't because I keep a linksys router on all the time, and that prevents the dynamic addressing system from changing the leased address).

I'm going to try to leave the modem off overnight, and hope that the lease time is short.

Hopefully that'll solve it.

That doesn't matter at all, nor does it prevent the dynamic addressing system from changing or revoking the leased address.  When the lease time on a DHCP provided address expires, the address must be renegotiated by the device.  Typically the address doesn't change and a new lease is given, but this is not mandated by the specification.

> I tried ipconfig /release, /renew; repair connection

That will only effect leases on the LAN side of the device.  The WAN side is controlled by the router and the ISPs DHCP server.

Once the device is turned off, or unplugged, the lease time is irrelevant as the address is then free to be reassigned.  What matters is that somebody else on the ISPs network is given your old address, otherwise, you will probably be assigned the same address when the device turns back on.

Indeed, and again this is entirely up to the ISP. As a side note, ISPs use RADIUS, not DHCP, though the concept is the same.

Your ISP might use RADIUS, but not all of them do, nor is it a requirement.  Around here, they almost all use DHCP or static IPs and tend to depend upon the MAC address for authentication (kinda scary, I know).

When I first moved on island, the ISP I had was using DHCP to hand out 192.168.x.x addresses to people on the loop.  I setup my own DHCP server and started pointing people to my own computer rather than the proper gateway.  (Because I was closer to the other clients than they were to the CO, my replies made it to them before the real servers.)  I acted like a proper gateway, routing their packets, but also recorded everything that went across.  (un)Fortunately, I didn't have enough bandwidth to continue doing this for long, but it was a fun proof of concept hack.  Had they properly configured their network devices, this would not have worked.

Is this with dialup or ADSL or cable? It just occurred to me that my only experience is with ADSL (though in my youth I worked full-time at a dialup ISP) - I suspect cable is more common outside Australia. The broadband market is mostly ADSL here.

It was etherloop DSL, and behaved much like improperly configured cable.

It all depends on the ISP. I work for a company that outsources support for 5+ ISPs and most of the DHCP or Radius servers will give you the same IP if you just power cycle, only one of the ISP's gives us the ability to release the ISP from DHCP and have you power cycle to get a new one, the rest are based on time leases (some as short as 6 hours). Usually if you turn off the modem for so long, your old ISP will get assigned to someone else and you will get a new one...it all just depends
