mplayer is getting worse and worse

I remember a few years ago this was the best video player out there. The only way to watch anything on the internet was with the mplayer pluggin. With later versions it started to crash a lot... and sometimes it wouldn't play a file.
Now today, the latest version doesn't even compile on my system. What a shock. It has gone from something I depended on since the 2.4 kernel to something that won't even compile...
I spent a few hours fiddling with variables and disabling this and that, but finally just gave up. Why should I use mplayer when Xine is now more stable and easy to compile?

adjust, paste the error call stack here, i'd like to take a look at it. i just recompiled mplayer with some functionality i was lacking and it went through fine. the problem i am battling right now is when i use flash in firefox, it wont release the audio output back to anything else. i have narrowed it down to nspluginwrapper's libflashplayer.so, but havent been able to get it to sort itself out yet... i have to kill it to release.
sorry if i jacked your thread. please post that call stack, though

bash-3.1$ ./configure --enable-gui bash-3.1$ make vo_ivtv.c: In function 'ivtv_reset': vo_ivtv.c:79: error: storage size of 'sd' isn't known vo_ivtv.c:80: error: storage size of 'sd1' isn't known vo_ivtv.c:84: error: 'IVTV_STOP_FL_HIDE_FRAME' undeclared (first use in this function) vo_ivtv.c:84: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once vo_ivtv.c:84: error: for each function it appears in.) vo_ivtv.c:87: error: 'IVTV_IOC_STOP_DECODE' undeclared (first use in this function) vo_ivtv.c:97: error: 'IVTV_IOC_START_DECODE' undeclared (first use in this function) vo_ivtv.c:80: warning: unused variable 'sd1' vo_ivtv.c:79: warning: unused variable 'sd' make[1]: *** [vo_ivtv.o] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/xgraph/Source/mplayer/MPlayer-1.0rc2/libvo' make: *** [libvo/libvo.a] Error 2
Then if I disable IVTV:
bash-3.1$ ./configure --enable-gui --disable-ivtv bash-3.1$ make libvo/libvo.a(video_out.o):(.data+0x50): undefined reference to `video_out_ivtv' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [mplayer] Error 1
I tried some other stuff but I still didn't get an error free compile. Maybe I could install it but I don't like doing that when errors keep showing up.

can you build it without the gui? which desktop environment do you use?

Yes, I get the same error message as with --enablegui
I am using KDE 3.5
It seems the problem has something to do with ivtv, something that I would never use anyway

also give this a shot in ./config --codecsdir=/usr/local/lib/codecs

Yeah same thing. I think that directory is the default anyway. /usr/local/lib/codecs does exist on my computer and it has the proper codecs.
