I need a survival book! Please!
    #8988696 - 09/26/08 09:29 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Can anyone recommend me a good handbook on wilderness-survival and all that kind of stuff? I need something that has a good checklist in it of stuff one would need.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have some good ones, but I can't remember what they're called and they are currently on the other side of the state from me.  It would be better if you could take up with a survival expert and learn from him/her, it's hard to learn that stuff from a book.  If I can find the names of my books I'll tell you.

Saw one at Barnes and Noble the other day called something like US ARMY survival handbook or somesuch name. It was a pretty thick book with military survival techniques for MANY things. Skimmed through i and looked good to me.

I'll trow it up on MegaUpload again soon.
send me a PM someday soon and remind me to send you the link.

The SAS Survival Handbook is the one I'm using right now, and I'm leaving into the wilderness on Monday. It covers almost absolutely everything.

The Army survival FM was pretty good. FM 10-26 or something.

I'd stock up on anything by Tom Brown (the tracker) and the Audubon Society guides to everything.

The SAS manual is pretty good, but no book is going to save your life, as "Into the Wild" demonstrated.

Exactly.  You have to gain as much hands on experience as possible before throwing yourself out there.  And even so, you'd be an idiot to not bring rations.

I'd learn to skin, gut, clean, and either salt or jerk every animal you can get your hands on.

Practice making fire from tinder up.

Practice making water collection tents, or boiling water.

Practice making shelter, in all possible weather conditions.

I have Ray Mears - Essential Bushcraft ..

Its a pretty decent book, it shows you in detail how to make all sorts of shelters in all sort of terrain, seasons etc. It shows you how to use all the basic survival equipment properly and how to live off of the land.

Its a pretty decent book .

If anyone has that SAS survival handbook in pdf form I'd appreciate it .

I'd like to challenge him to a track off in a deciduous forest.  I know I wouldn't win, but it would be cool to see how I would stack up.  It's amazing how you can read the environment like a book.

I like all the traps for animals he showed in the book, and the huge index of edible and medicinal plants. I need the one with the actual color pictures of the plants

Oh, and the structures. The part about building the different types of houses was good.

For sure man   Trapping is the way to go when it comes to obtaining meat, and you can never know too many trapping methods. The book goes in depth to many different methods, to simple, yet effective, to elaborate, high yield traps.
I carried the entire book in my 2 month stay in the ozarks, and have employed quite a few of its techniques with great success.

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

It really depends on your intent and purposes. I carry just a few select pages of traps that work well for me, and keep them in in the FM21-76(which Ive printed and shrunk down to save space). But Ive been trapping for quite a while, and am very familiar with the skill.
I would recommend carrying the entire book, as its only 72 pages and doesnt take up much space in your pack.
Besides, I've found that having some informative reading around after being in the wild for several months brings some comfort to the lonely traveler.

Can anyone recommend me a good handbook on wilderness-survival and all that kind of stuff? I need something that has a good checklist in it of stuff one would need.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I recommend this one.:yesnod:
