anyway, i have an old alpine cd player in my car that only plays certain cds. i made about 20 GD cds before i realized they didn't work in my car... its all the same format and they work in my other cd players, its just seems to be that some brands work in the car and some dont, do you all have any idea why that is? it actually does play the other kind sometimes, like one in 20 tries, so it works, just for some reason i guess the lazer is having trouble picking up the vibes, or something? my cd player ate too much acid i bet...

What format are th CD's encoded in (what extension is on the filenames burned to the disk) and what formats does thte CD player play? That'd be my first guess. I've got an alpine head unit several years old, and I think I got it right when they were starting to comonly support mp3's on aftermarket headunits.

My old Alpine would do the same... Never figured it out.
It's funny how this reminds me tho, since I can recall pushing certain burned CDs in several times before they finally worked.

Sometimes it is the media type as well... CD-R vs CD+R vs CDRW.

Not true. Music CD-R discs have a less sensitive dye that doesn't degrade as quickly when left inside hot cars.

in which they should say the dye they use on the package.
I think its ridiculous all these products are sold without any technical specifications. Instead, you buy the "music" version. Dumb.
I remember trying to search for the dye I wanted when I was buying CD's at a store, and NONE of the damn Cd's had that information. Only "CD DATA" "CD MUSIC" "CD ARBITRARY LABEL THAT TELLS YOU NOTHING". Really frustrating.

it shouldn't be a matter of cleaning it because every cd of one type works and every cd of the other type doesnt work, i guess i'll just have to look for the kind that works, they were out of it last time.

So rather than music vs data, you think the consumer would rather know cyanine, phthalocyanine, metallized azo, advanced phthalocyanine, transparent formazan, etc?

You are the first person I have met that knows there are different types of dyes in use.

well you can tell by looking at the discs that the dye is different between some, and you notice a difference in longevity in cars. After loosing cd's to heat or whatever you start to investigate your options.
And there's no reason why their has to be a choice between dyes or stupid descriptors, they could simply have both.
I don't see how "music" or "data" makes any sense though considering music is data. I never knew what that meant till you mentioned it. Why would anyone consider music vs data to be a more robust dye? Why not sell the CD's w/ performance stats on the packagin instead of a weird "music/data" label that doesn't' make any sense.
I just am pissed when I pay extra for something the store clerk claims is the "better" cd only to find that crappy green colored dye (cyanine I presume given the color but I forget right now). I'd rather know the dye or know the preformance specs rather than some marketing hype (music vs data).
Course now I just order CD's online so I get what I want.

Not enough customers care about dye specifications to justify the real estate on the label. I hate that kind of shit, where companies use poor descriptions. Its like pizza places that only sell med - xLarge, it should just be called small-L. Yea, something like that...

yep, pisses me off.
But seriously, like a few millimeters would be all it takes for the dye type, and maybe 4 square centimeters would work for a table with very minimal technical specs so you could compare the offerings in the manufacturer's line.
Its just like drugs. You go to the store for your cough and congestion to buy dextromethorphan, guaiffesen (sp?), and maybe pseudoephedrine (if you feel like submitting to the anti-meth nonsense they've got in my state).
Instead, you search through shitloads of boxes that are all the exact same product but with different lables on them. Why can't they simply have the drug name on the box next to the bullshit product and symptom indicator?
But I guess that's the only reason people still buy "tylenol" APAP rather than the stuff right next to it that's a third of the price and the exact same drug and inactive ingredients.
People like name brand molecules and people like worthless descriptors like "music" "new" and "great" instead of objective measurements on their packaging.

yeah, dumb.
The coffee shop in the student center at my school does that crap. They sell in "grande" and some other starbucks-style sizes I refuse to use on principle. Some folks try to correct you when you order a medium coffee "you mean a grande? (or whatever size a medium is)" No asshole, I mean a medium, the intermediate size.

Rather than dye type (as there are too many to remember), I would rather see a standardized time, temperature, light sensitivity, and durability scale for the various media.

Yeah I agree. I knew there were different quality dyes, but fuck if I can remember all of them! A standardized system would be nice. Altho, I do agree that there should be one tiny line somewhere on the label indicating the type, for those that would like to know. Quite frankly, I'm willing to bet there are branded companies that would be against that idea. After all, if you're Sony and you're selling cheap shit, why would you want people to know it's cheap shit?
Maybe we should pick out a major respected brand, and send requests for it to be implemented. If one big brand starts it, the others might copy-cat?...

Music CD-R also already have a single track of data the tells whatever player that it is an audio cd as well. Most, if not all nowadays, burning software will put this track there for you though.
Ive never heard of the die thing, though it makes sense, as there are all sorts of dies they use for DVD's. I've also never had a problem with the standard cd's getting too hot in my car and I live in an area of texas that regularly gets above 100F outside as well.

It is actually both heat and light. The effect is slow and reduces the lifetime of the media. If I remember correctly, cyanine dye is the most sensitive to this problem.
