he says uh a lot i concur
but he also has actual subject matter to his words instead of empty words that don't really mean much or contain anything we don't already know

Perhaps, but I don't understand the "great orator" bit... he has even won awards for his speaking?  Take away his teleprompter and he flops around like a fish out of water.  It worries me that there isn't much going on upstairs when he is unable to express himself without reading something that has been scripted for him.

I've not heard him described as a great orator other than on here, but I've been impressed with his speeches in the past. The content, rather than the presentation. I don't know how much of his speeches he writes and how much is written for him (it'd be a mixture, I'd say) but in any case, ObamaTM, as a political 'package', has given some very good speeches.

edit:
http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1837368,00.html
Quote:

Obama takes an unusually hands-on approach to his speech writing, more so than most politicians. His best writing time comes late at night when he's all alone, scribbling on yellow legal pads. He then logs these thoughts into his laptop, editing as he goes along. This is how he wrote both of his two best selling books—Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope—staying up after Michelle and his two young daughters had long gone to bed, reveling in the late night quiet. For this speech Obama removed himself from the distractions at home and spent many nights in a room in the Park Hyatt Hotel in Chicago. These late-night sessions produced long, meandering texts that were then circulated to a close group of advisers, including Axelrod and Obama's speechwriter Jon Favreau—a 27-year-old wunderkind wordsmith. "When you're working with Senator Obama the main player on a speech is Senator Obama," Axelrod said. "He is the best speechwriter in the group and he knows what he wants to say and he generally says it better than anybody else would."

He has won two Grammy's for best spoken word album.  As I said above, it is amazing how poorly he does when you take away his script.

Another Luddite/coaster off topic reply.  You two are like peas in a pod.

agreeed, exactly why I thought bush was an idiot

But I don't know..  I know alot of smart people, well I know some at least, that are poor speakers, have small vocabularies, and are unable to clearly express thoughts.  That doesn't neccesarily mean they're dumb, I don't think, or that they're unable to be president.

It is concerning though, I agree.

(and I really wonder how hard law school is.  People seem to act like its hard, butknowing how many, and what quality folks they are, people that have graduated law school that I know, I kinda doubt it.)

Perhaps I am biased from the university that I attended.  As engineers and scientists, we were forced to write at least one essay for every class, regardless of the class.  (Try writing an essay for linear algebra or organic chem lab.)  The school wanted to ensure that we were able to express our knowledge in such a way that others could understand.  When I see Obama stammer and stutter, I can't help but think he is looking for a "politically correct" slime his way out of admitting things that he would rather not admit.  Not so much dumb, but dishonest.

The dumb daft fuck doesn't understand that it is unqualified homeowners who caused the whole fucking mess in the first place.  That followed from gummint regulation requiring banks to lend to the bums.  Wall Street is the MOST highly regulated segment of the economy.  They never would have lent money to the shitbags if they weren't forced to as a precondition for doing business at all.  Some people are just fucking...... fill in the blank.  The gummint forced banks to lend money to losers they never would have touched if left to their own devices.  Frannie and Freddie?  Why did they exist except to give loans to losers?  Obama?  Whose campaign owns more Freddie and Fannie fuck ups than any other in history?  Why, none, of course.  You can chug all the O-choad you want but he is a flagrant liar and asshole even without his obvious racism.  Putting this fuckwidget anywhere near management of a 7/11 is foolish.  Of a Target store?  Criminal.

You kidding?  My organic chemistry lab was two hours per semester (which for labs means three hours worth of weekly work equals one credit hour) , and two semesters, of voluminous, stupid prelab and lab reports.

Prelab bullshit includes the obvious, lab report includes all sorts of statistical crap, as well as prose explaining why the reactions work, why regioselectivity is present or not, why we ran at this temp, why.... blah blah blah.

But I get your point.

I guess maybe you're right.  I do think that dumb folks can learn things despite being dumb (not being arrogant just talking about less aptitude than average here) and maybe the "smart" folks I know that speak poorly are really just persistant and good students.

I know there's a huge difference between the folks who "get it" and "don't" in chemistry, and it is kind of weird to see the differences demonstrate themselves in labs (carring about stuff that isn't important, like percise masses of a non-limiting reagent or whatnot, and blowing off stuff that really is important, purification procedures followed et cet).

Seems often the guys that don't get it aren't too great at expressing themselves.  But I could also be inventing things here, I don't know.

I see the opposite... he is stalling for time while he tries to figure out how to phrase whatever he wants to say so that it doesn't come back and bite him in the ass.  On the opposite end of the table, we have Bush that just spits the stupid stuff out and looks like a fool.  Would you argue that Bush is spitting out stupid stuff to show us that he does not have the moral high ground on any issue?  I doubt it.  I don't buy it with Obama either.

maybe the answers to life aren't black and white, but the answers to "what are you going to do, senator?" or "what is your plan for iraq/economy/my broke ass, senator" are.

What are you going to do, senator?  If he can't answer that (read, this, that, or I don't know yet, but here's what I can tell you) then he shouldn't be running.

Its not that I think he can't answer, I think he'd rather ride the bullshit to election day.  Why commit to a position that can be attacked?  Just commit to "bridging the achievment gap", "taking care of the working class", and "sending a message to washington".  Anyone can do that through statistics, just look at how the ONDCP/ DEA claim success year after year by making a press conference every time the stupid highschool survery poll numbers dip, and asking for more money every time they bump up.
