What's YOUR opinion on giving $$ to N.O.R.M.L.?
    #897990 - 09/21/02 05:50 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

N.O.M.L. is a p.a.c. that is suposed to lobby congress to make changes in the various laws regarding weed. Some think that is a worthy cause, High Times strongly endorses it.

Here is your chance to be heard:

I think that N.O.R.M.L. is
A very worthy cause for the pot smokers of America.
A usless p.a.c. that seems to waste donations given to it.
A worthy cause, but they never make a diference in congress.
A goverment front for the purpose of collecting information on the American legalzation movment.

maybe....  i only signed up for the newsletter for just that. a newsletter.

all i wanted was updates on what was going on, and i'm attacked by "give me money" crap.

they actually sent in the e-mail before last the numbers of subscribers and the number of the subscribers that donated money.

HUGE disparity.

I tried going to a NORML benefit concert in my city and because it was at a bar, they wouldn't let me in cause I'm not twenty one. What kinda bullshit is that?

Personaly I feel that a bar is not the best place to hold one of these things. There are a lot of weed heads that dont drink, and many supporters that are 18-21.... at least thats my opinion.

Me and a friend started a chapter of NORML at our college... It was easy, they will send you an activist packet that you must complete before they accept you and you MUST follow the guidelines for both being a Not for proffit organization as well as a chapter of the larger organization..

The activist packet made us familarize ourselvs with our local government and how to work the system... We threw concerts where you could either pay to get in or you could write to a politician instead. We had a board with politicians names and their views on legelization and pre addressed envelopes. All we asked was a few paragraphs and we would mail off stacks of them each show.

For the most part we did alot of good things to eduicate the public, he had speakers come to assemblys at our college, some were local fameous people and some were sick patients, we passed out endless amounts of information, had fund raisers and all in all we raised tens of thousands of dollars in one year.

The entire thing was GREAT FUN and it was all worth it, even the part where we got investigated for fraud and embezlement because some guy claimed a $26,000 donation to us that he never made, he even tried to claim that we stole the money but we were STRICT about keeping records about EVERYTHING and sonce we were part of the college and the college said that they would sue for defimation the guy told the truth.

Vote good things for NORML. They do more than you think.

that's awesome, gabba!  i would like to start such a chapter at my school here in Santa Cruz.  last year i attended UCSB, and they had a festival on 4/20 with information and live music.  there was a good turnout, but i doubt it helped any with the legalization process.  mailings to politicians for admission to your event is a fantastic idea   good job~

so how many hours a week did you put into your effort?  ..and how many people did you have working with you?

i definitely think NORML could make a difference if more people were dedicated to the cause.

I put WAY too much time in...
My best friend was the President, I was the Vice and his Girlfriend was the Secretary, We used the Colleges treasure because we were a "club" at the college and in all I propably spent 25 hours a week doing stuff for NORML... I spent at least 35 hours per week when organizing Voter Registration Drives which turned out to be the most fun but LOTS of telephone work.
I had to personaly call every voter I registered and remind them of the place they would go to vote and what day.

It made things much easier knowing bands such as Papa Roach, Reggae Angels and Black Uhri, Plus the several other great bands in the bay area...
Get a good band and some good BB-Q and people will come by the hundreds, all you need to do then is push the idea that they need to vote and not slack off about it...

I also got to go to a Prop 215 celebration party. I got to shake hands with Dennis Perone (origionater of the medical marijuana movement), Jack Herer, Chris Conrad, Micheal Moriarty, Willie Brown (mayoer of SanFrancisco) and Woody Harrolson (sp on all names ????). We accepted an award for our contributions along with our sponsors the Cannabis Action Network out of Berkeley and I still think that it was the greatest night of my life...

It's a good organizaton. They do a lot of good for the movement and they do make a legislative difference. Look at the medical MJ initiatives for instance, they're all sponsored by NORML. They're getting the foot in the door with the medical stuff and then it will be for recreational. Incrimentalism is the way we're gonna win. NORML does make a difference.

NORML is a great organization. Everybody should be a member.

I'm a little surpised by the poll results. Thru out most of the polling the majority votes show that most thenk that NORML is a worthy pac... It's made me rethink my opinion of it!

I don't know. I think they're pretty overrated.
