liquid mycelim working, but slower than spores???
    #897762 - 09/21/02 05:44 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

My friend made a liquid mycelium solution that was looking good. He has been using it to innoculate some birdseed/grain jars. The solution works and has gotten the jars fully colonized, but it takes about 5 or so days to kick in, the spores usually germinate sooner, what's up w. that, any ideas?!?! Thanks!!!!

This sounds very unusual. I find that a mycellium innoculation is usually a day or two faster.

Perhaps your friend blended the mycelium too long, thereby destroying the cell structure
or maybe the solution/culture is too old...
I also find mycelium to be faster than spores...at least for oysters....

Well he didn't use a blender or anything. He used the malt extract solution tek. It's definitely weird. He has noticed that the large majority of the mycelium, the big fat healthy strands, can't be sucked up in the syringe. Any tips on how to make it all suckable?? Hahaha!!! thanks guys!!!

Well, this is your problem. You have a very low concentration of mycellium in the syringe. What I do is suck up and shoot out the water several times. This creates a very forceful stream of water that will quickly break up anything in the solution.

Throw some broken glass into the jar.....be sure and sterilize the glass.

You can use the broken glass to break up the mycelium.....that is in the jar.

Broken Glass huh?????  Sounds like a lot of extra, and pointless work.  Sucking the solution up and spraying it back in should do the trick like Mickey said.  And why in the world would you choose broken glass anyway...out of all the dumb things that you could have thought of to throw in the jar,  why would you choose broken glass?  No what I mean man

Yes, and broken glass is inert.  It won't rust into your spore solution...

Well that makes sense then.  I was wondering why you couldn't add something like nuts or bolts.  I guess glass really would be the best bet.  :frown: sorry for posting that without considering the rust factor.

On that note. In the past (before I started doing the syringe trick) I used stainless steel nuts and bolts. Worked perfectly and no rust.

"Any tips on how to make it all suckable??"

Try using a 14 gauge syringe needle, you can get them at a farm suply store. They are much larger and wont clog up as easily.
