Building a New Computer
    #8974482 - 09/23/08 06:09 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

I've decided to build my own computer for the first time. Here are the parts I'm thinking about getting. The computer is going to used for the basics, no gaming, and I'm going to use Ubuntu as my OS.

Is there anything I should watch out for while building? Any parts that are especially easy to break?

I would advise spending just a bit more and get a bigger hard drive.  Other than that, looks like a solid basic PC.

change mobos, for the same price, i recommend this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128077

or for $10 more:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138075

Also, i would look at getting a different gfx card, i know you don't game, but I have had a chaintech mobo one time, with nothing but problems, a different brand wouldnt' be a bad choice IMO.

This card would be great with either board:

with those changes, you would be set with a rock solid system IMO...

peace

If you are not going to game, get a MOBO with an integrated graphics, they work fine for video and browsing.

The easiest thing to fuck up when building your own is putting the heat sink on the processor.  Make sure the thermal grease is applied correctly and take extra care in that step.

I strongly recommend getting 2GB of ram instead of 1GB.

Why would he need 2 GB to browse the web and use a word processor?  You can do that with 256!

I ran XP,  Maple 11 (math software), office and audio video media on a P3 w/320MB (256+64) just 6 months ago.  It ran fine. :ohwell:

"Fine" is subjective. If I had to do anything on XP with only 256mb of RAM I'd go insane.

I'd really consider getting another 1GB of RAM. Ubuntu is a pretty light OS, but for only $15 more there's no reason not to, even if you're doing nothing more than the basics with it.

What patch level?  XP bloated with time.  It started out where 256M was fine, but with SP3 installed, it is inadequate.  You will spend the majority of your time swapping.  With memory prices being less than $20 for 512M DIMMs, I cannot justify anybody recommending 256M.  There is also a world of difference between 320M and 256M with XP.

Exactly.

I just noticed your video card is AGP, that motherboard has no AGP slots as far as I can tell. Your choices are to get a different motherboard with an AGP slot (not many of those made anymore), find a PCI-E video card or just leave the video card out altogether and stick with the motherboard's onboard graphics chip.

The hardest part is probably installing the processor and its heat sink. Handle it carefully and don't force anything. When you're clamping the heat sink onto it try to get it right the first time, the thermal paste on the bottom works best that way. Luckily the heatsinks for Socket 775 are way easier to install than they were in the days of Pentiums and Athlons.

Make sure you touch some bare metal in the case often to discharge any static you might build up. Make sure you don't forget any loose screws in the case, I've fried a video card by forgetting a screw that later fell on it

Everything else is just a matter of plugging things into the right places and crossing your fingers for the moment of truth

Do processors' prices drop that fast?! I built my computer a few months back and my E6750 was about 200 dollars back then... Wow and I got it from newegg. That's amazing stuff right there. But I already planned on upgrading my whole mobo to obtain PCI-E slots possibly.

Oh and if your going to go with 2 GB of ram you might want to try to start up with 1 stick when you first fire up your computer. And then when you shut down just add the second stick. That was the only thing I ran into when my tower wouldn't start. But yeah. New egg. FTW.
