state college's putting laxatives in food

Has anyone here heard of state college's putting mild laxatives in their cafeteria food? The food at my school goes through me in 5 minutes and when I told one of my roommates they told me that all state colleges put laxatives in their food in case there is a food-borne illness, so that everyone just shits it out in no time.
If this is true and not just a bs rumor, is this even legal let alone ethical?

I've heard it too and have experienced exactly the same thing.
A buddy of mine used to work in food services for an on campus job. He said that they add laxatives or spices/herbs that have laxative properties to some of the foods that are prone to spoilage. That way if they go bad while they're sitting out the you can eat them, but the food just passes right through you before infection or food poisoning has time to set in.
Sounds logical to me, and this guy would have no reason to lie to me.

Oh yeah, another thing. I don't know that it's so much the school that does it as it is their food provider. In this case it was Aramark. Aramark is a fucking atrocious excuse for a company. A prison in the county next to mine canceled their contract with Aramark early because the warden said that the food was sub par quality and Aramark never fixed the problem.
Aramark should change their slogan to "It may not good enough for prisoners, but college students love it!"
I bet they're your food service provider too.

We used to call it the "DC Drop" cuz within 20 minutes of eating that food... you were in the bathroom "dropping"
i always thought they did this too, but how can them putting a laxative in your food be legal? I heard they do it to help prevent food poisoning... it's out of your system real fast.

Hahaha, yeah we called it the "<cafeteria name> rainbows," because within an hour of eating it you had to take a horrible multicolored shit.

WOW
If anyone could point out what are the Pro's and Con's of having laxitives in your food, I would appreciate that.

Self catered ftw. However, the food I cook is normally so ridiculously hot that it burns as much as it did when I ate it, when it comes out the other end.
I haven't seen what cafeteria food looks like, let alone what it tastes like. Fuck having someone else prepare all my meals.

Ugh. The dorms were a terrible time.
Liquidy shits from bad food and the horrible 1-ply toilet paper made for a very sore bum sometimes.

"Southern Connecticut State University's Food Services are provided by Chartwell's Food Services."
Probably just as shitty though.
Circularvortex: you hit the nail on the head dude, the two things I will remember most from dorm life (besides stuff about people) is the liquidy shits and 1-ply toilet paper

Wow, I thought that this phenomenon was only t my college but i see now that it is much bigger than that. It is kind of strange, it makes me want to buy my own food and make all my own meals.... damn having no money or cooking devices.

Well, this was a few years ago, and I was only in school for one semester but I distinctly remember wondering something a long these lines after about a month.
Ultimately I put down my irregularity to stress and other factors of being in a new and strange environment, but I was really never satisfied with that answer.
To be honest I think it probably has more to do with the quality of the bulk food suppliers that they deal with. I can only imagine those vendors are cut throat, the average quality is terrible, and the cafeteria wants to maximize their margins so they always get the cheapest shit. Hence, you end up with liquid shits for the rest of your tenure.
I've gone camping for many weeks consecutively and done more stressful things than attend a school for 6 months, and I never had problems with my regularity. The entire time I lived in that dorm and ate the food I never had a single solid shit, I swear to fucking god.
Once I got so fed up thinking about how much I was paying for this trash that I asked to talk to the cafeteria manager, and I asked him what they put in their food, because I hadn't had a solid shit since I'd been there. He looked dumbfounded and was at a loss for words so I just said fuck it man, peace out sorry to waste your time. I was leaving anyways and the dude looked legitimately uncomfortable when I asked him the question... I really didn't want to get into details at that point, suffice it to say.
It wasn't even diarrhea, it was as though the "solid" matter had the consistency of packing peanuts... it just blew out like insulation through a compressed air gun...
It was not a state school but I distinctly remember seeing Chartwell packaging materials coming off the truck. Like I said, probably less of a conspiracy to avoid health scares and more of a conspiracy to feed you garbage that costs them $1 a day while charging you $15 over the course of however many meals.

Heh, I'm surprised that so many people have had the same problem.
I occasionally write for my college's newspaper. I wrote a story about the horrible food on campus and how shady Aramark was. Out of all of the stories I did, that one got the most feedback. I had people I didn't even know coming up to me on campus saying "Hey, you're that guy that wrote the article about how shitty the food is, right? I'm glad you did that, it needed to be said." So what did the school do about it? Nothing.
Oh yeah, did I mention that my college has a hush-hush contact with a state prison to provide excons with jobs in our cafeterias?
Perhaps I'll go have a talk with the provost and see what he has to say... Then I'll do a follow up article.
