Moderators, feel free to move this to appropriate forum.
ps. For whoever is interested, these were made from organic rye flour & vermiculite, except for one where I substituted half of the rye flour with oat flakes.

Yep. What's wrong with drinking glasses? I haven't found proper shoulderless jars anywhere. Glasses work fine.

Well I haven't... I'm sure I could find them with a little effort, but why bother? The glasses work fine. In the "PF-tek for simple minds" they use glasses.

Yes, but with grain you can use shouldered jars, which are easier to find. Also I can't do grain because I don't have a PC yet.

I used that method too, works great, since the dry verm layer is your contamination barrier a tight sealing lid is not essential. Never had any problems with using drinking glasses and foil. The added advantage is you can use all sorts of different shaped glasses as long as the top is wides so the cakes slide out.
Thats a good amount of colinisation, expect those to be fully colinised at 14 days, wait 7 days after full colinisation, dunk for 24 hours and roll in dry verm. Into your fruiting chamber and mostion that verm!!
Good luck

Thanks, and that is exactly what I'm planning to do.
Although, next time I'll know I don't need to leave that much space for the dry verm layer.. I really wanted to play it safe so I ended up with almost an inch of dry verm. Oh well, you live and learn.

Also, I am planning to construct a PMP for the cakes. I have a 38 liter plastic container, I intend to put a at least 100 l/h air pump connected to a bubbler ring on the bottom (the ring on the bottom, the pump outside) and then add perlite and water on it. Also I'll leave the cover slightly open so the old air can escape from the top. Is there any flaws to this plan?

I'll be changing that light bulb to a fluorescent "plant light" that should produce blue & red light mostly, I couldn't find a "cold white" light so I hope that'll work out.

I just noticed a shitload of hyphal knots in two of the jars, and what looks like a pin forming in one of them! Those weren't there earlier today :o
Unfortunately my camera's batteries died. I'm now proceeding to dunk these two cakes.

I spoke too soon.. there's a third one! So I have a total of 4 cakes birthed and dunking in the fridge... three of them started pinning in the jars, and they all look very rhizomorphic. I'll try to find some batteries tomorrow to get some pics.

Thanks Juke, what's OCD?
Just to ease my nooby mind, dunking won't disturb the pins if they're really small, right?

Thanks. Oh, I have one more question, I might be crumbling two cakes to a small tray and casing them to save space. Can the cakes be crumbled if they already have pins or hyphal knots?

Yes they can. I'd go ahead and remove the pins though. Also, instead of just crubling and slapping a casing over teh top, look into using coir. It is the easiest bulk substrate i've ever used. Simply chop a tiny piece of coir off the brick, put it in a pot, pour some boiling water over it and wait 30 min for it to expand.
Mix an equal amount of coir into the crumbled BRF and you will effectively double your yield in less than 4 days.

Thanks for the tip, and yeah, I've been thinking of spawning to coir for a while now. Problem is, at the moment I'm kinda broke so can't buy coir... I'll be trying it on my next batch, right now I'm happy enough just to see how well a crumbled & cased cake performs vs. a dunked & rolled cake. My guess is the difference won't be huge...

No I'm not that broke (but almost), it's just, the only place I've found around here that sells coir only sells it in like huge bulk packages, of 20 bricks or something... I'll keep looking though.
...not to mention I just spent like 100€ on supplies for growing, and my budget is spent for a while now...

Righto I see, I just go to my local hardware store, its called Bunnings and they sell plants, pots, seeds, rocks, tools, building material and everything to do with DIY, so have a look for a store like that.
Cased cakes only produce as much as they would uncased so its pointless, the only reason ppl case them is because their FC sucks and does not provide the moisture and RH the the cake needs to get maximum yield.

Yeah, I'm only casing them to save space in my small FC, I've got these small plastic containers that can probably fit two cakes in, while taking about the same space as one cake, taking in account the cakes also fruit from the sides.

What's the best way to sterilize/pasteurize vermiculite to be used for dunk & roll? Keeping in mind I don't have a PC yet. Should I stick it in the oven, or would microwave do?

Ok, first cake got out of bath today, took a small shower under the faucet, and decided to roll in the verm. The cake had fun, frolicking in the verm box, then she felt an urge to start reproducing so she went into the fruiting chamber.

Three more cakes are still taking their baths, but they told the first one they will meet her in the fruiting chamber.

All cakes decided they had bathed long enough so they all went to the fruiting chamber and had a good time.

I counted 6 small pins total on 3 of the cakes today. They might have more on the sides I can't see on. I'll get some batteries for the camera tomorrow to take some pin pics!

No I meant to use perlite, but acquiring some proved to be such a hassle I just got some LECA instead. I'm not sure if that's the same thing as geolite, they sure look the same...

Just inspected the cakes closely and it looks like there's some bright white fuzz starting to grow on the moist verm layer on the cakes, can't get a picture of it yet... could it be cobweb or is the mycelium just trying to colonize on the rolled verm?
edit..Never mind, I decided it's mycelium.

Good job! I'm glad you're having fun. Wow, two days after dunking & rolling you're seeing pins? I usually have to wait a week! The fluffy white is almost assuredly mycelium.

Hmm.. I picked the fruits a bit late on some cakes, and I'm afraid they sporulated on the cakes.. I dunked the cakes for some 12 hours and put back in the FC.. will they give worse yields if the cakes get spores on them? I've heard someone say the spores hitting the mycelium is a trigger for stopping the fruiting stage. I'm getting some pins, but they're definitely less and smaller than in the first flush... any ideas?
Some pictures. This one is still going through first flush...

The rest are on second..

Yeah I did. I think the light I have may have something to do with the smallness of fruits, since I couldn't find a proper 5000K CFL I put on a plant light that should give light on both ends of the spectrum, red and blue but not much in the middle.

This is the spectrum of the light I'm giving them.

I doubt that the light has much to do with the size of the fruits, it generally just gives direction and much isn't needed.

Lighting requirements for mushroom cultivation
Contrary to popular belief, most mushrooms require light to develop properly. Mushrooms are not plants, thus do not use light as a source of energy the way plants do. However, due to many factors, some of which are not yet fully understood, light is extremely important in the primordia forming stage with most fungi, and with species such as P cubensis and the oyster mushrooms (P ostreatus), it’s important to provide bright, high frequency light all the way through to harvest or your fruits will be under-developed and of poor quality.

Lights are really easy to find. Go to Wal-Mart and go to the lighting section. GE makes a daylight light, they have either fluorescent or compact fluorescent lights at the 6500k range. Also check target. I grabbed a 24" fluorescent light and a fixture to mount on the wall. I mounted it just above the top trays in my greenhouse but low enough that all the trays can benefit from it. I would grab one of those lights for the future. $8 for the bulb, $8 for the fixture, the investment, priceless! Oh and they save electricity as well! Go green!

Dunk for 24 hours. Preferably held down in a deep container. The pressure will help them hydrate.

No.

I've never heard of that. To my knowledge and experience there's no truth to that.

Possibly not enough hydration. Maybe low humidity?

You bumped your thread because no-one was responding. People give you their thoughts, and you respond with a smart-ass comment. How is anyone to know where you live? I think most people assume that you really don't live at the North Pole, but if you do, fucking unscrew one out of the ceiling in Santa's workshop. The ceilings should be pretty low with all those elves.
I just use a plain-Jane generic-ass fluorescent light and it works like a charm.

Humidity is a constant 99% in my PMP (yes I have a properly calibrated hygrometer), and I still mist them just to be safe. I mist from a distance, not directly on the cakes. I also fan them a few times a day.
And I don't live on the north pole, but pretty damn close.
Also lighten up, I do really appreciate all advice, but telling me what I can or can't get from walmart is pretty useless to me, as I'm sure you understand. There was no hostile intentions in my post, if the guy feels insulted, let him tell it to me himself and I will apologize to him. No need to turn this thread to a flamewar...

Update.
Here's one of the cakes now... this one is happily sprouting mushrooms in every direction. She's on her second flush now...

And here's a cake of the Amazonian strain, check out the crazy rhizomorphs - it's trying to search for more food beyond the verm barrier!

I almost feel sorry I have to smash this beautiful babe in pieces, but I want to spawn it to coir...
