One of the cakes has now been 100% colonized for a week, so *dunk* and into the fridge it goes... have a good bath dear, see you in 24 hours.

Happy birthday dear mushroom, happy birthday to you...

I just noticed a shitload of hyphal knots in two of the jars, and what looks like a pin forming in one of them! Those weren't there earlier today :o
Unfortunately my camera's batteries died. I'm now proceeding to dunk these two cakes.

I spoke too soon.. there's a third one! So I have a total of 4 cakes birthed and dunking in the fridge... three of them started pinning in the jars, and they all look very rhizomorphic. I'll try to find some batteries tomorrow to get some pics.

Thanks Juke, what's OCD?
Just to ease my nooby mind, dunking won't disturb the pins if they're really small, right?

Thanks. Oh, I have one more question, I might be crumbling two cakes to a small tray and casing them to save space. Can the cakes be crumbled if they already have pins or hyphal knots?

Yes they can. I'd go ahead and remove the pins though. Also, instead of just crubling and slapping a casing over teh top, look into using coir. It is the easiest bulk substrate i've ever used. Simply chop a tiny piece of coir off the brick, put it in a pot, pour some boiling water over it and wait 30 min for it to expand.
Mix an equal amount of coir into the crumbled BRF and you will effectively double your yield in less than 4 days.

Thanks for the tip, and yeah, I've been thinking of spawning to coir for a while now. Problem is, at the moment I'm kinda broke so can't buy coir... I'll be trying it on my next batch, right now I'm happy enough just to see how well a crumbled & cased cake performs vs. a dunked & rolled cake. My guess is the difference won't be huge...

No I'm not that broke (but almost), it's just, the only place I've found around here that sells coir only sells it in like huge bulk packages, of 20 bricks or something... I'll keep looking though.
...not to mention I just spent like 100€ on supplies for growing, and my budget is spent for a while now...

Righto I see, I just go to my local hardware store, its called Bunnings and they sell plants, pots, seeds, rocks, tools, building material and everything to do with DIY, so have a look for a store like that.
Cased cakes only produce as much as they would uncased so its pointless, the only reason ppl case them is because their FC sucks and does not provide the moisture and RH the the cake needs to get maximum yield.

Yeah, I'm only casing them to save space in my small FC, I've got these small plastic containers that can probably fit two cakes in, while taking about the same space as one cake, taking in account the cakes also fruit from the sides.

What's the best way to sterilize/pasteurize vermiculite to be used for dunk & roll? Keeping in mind I don't have a PC yet. Should I stick it in the oven, or would microwave do?
