I think you're going to want to fork over some cash for coir, peat, lime (oyster shells), and/or vermiculite. I can't think of any other materials that would be as suitable for a casing mixture.

I disagree. As a casing layer, verm in my opinion is superior to straw and manure.

You could possibly mix up and sterilize/pasteurize some regular potting soil with some of that perlite to keep it from getting packed down. Although I have never personally tried it, there is no reason that it wouldn't work.

Regular potting soil could work, but it sucks compared to using traditional casing materials, and I don't think you ever want perlite in your casing mixture.

Is that due to the water retention properties of verm?

verm is not nutritious
Exactly, and as far as I can tell, he wants information concerning his casing layer, not what to use as a nutritive bulk substrate. This is what he states: I cant sem to find vermiculite anywhere...and now i am broke I need help on what I can use as a casing....
If he needs a casing layer, poo or straw would be poor choices. If he wants information concerning bulk substrates and how to case them, he needs to read the FAQ..

That plus the fact that vermiculite is inert and has no nutrients.

In reply to:
50/50+ and poo do the same thing, they give the casing something to colonize, and hold in water, the difference is poo is nutritious, which is an added bonus.
Yes, but the manure contaminates much easier than a non-nutritive casing layer. I find this a marked disadvantage. Additionally, manure does not hold nearly the same amount of water in my experience, and it's not even close to as light and airy.
If you would like to conduct a little test, next time, fruit one tray of manure without a traditional casing and one with 50/50+. See which one peforms better..

All your questions will be answered in the Cultivation FAQ. Concerning grass clippings, I wouldn't use it. Find some straw, but please ask permission. Nobody likes a thief.

Seeing as you live in the country you should try growing outdoors with compost.

Mycofile points out the advantages of a straw dung casing. He says one is that if some of the casing gets pulled away then the exposed material is prone to contam. Manure straw reduces this probability. This is in his bulk neglect pictures. Also I read in a post that nothing works faster than a coir mix. Yeah Vermiculite is sterile..and in Stamets book ( on a chart ) you can see that nothing seems to match its retentive properties...but there is an asbestos warning on the bag....You can see a picture of a vermiculite casing in one of Servator's posts and it certainly works good no doubt about it. I might be wrong but with more nutes you would get more potent fruitbodies rather than just big ones with a lot of water in them.
