Actually, the separateness is quite fun, as well. Vive la difference!

If you're not separate you can't unite.

Which one is a 'better' belief system?
From my observation... Believing we are separate brings 'me', which brings selfishness, greed, attachment... Believing we are all one being brings compassion, acceptance, love...
Which one is better in your view?
Even looking at it rationally/logicaly...
Which one is more evolutionary/revolutionary? Which one is going backwards/stagnant?
Better?
The belief of separateness believes it is better; this is why it has propagated itself forcefully so well. It pulls with it the suffering that lubricates and incites its transmission. It allows one to forget they are feeling worse as they become more separate from the truth, more isolated in their wealth of material. The belief of the better, and you can kill to prove it.
The belief of oneness is the belief that the self is complete; to become better is only to relax into the awareness. It gently shrugs off of it the suffering that prevents it from arising. It allows one to remember they are feeling better as they become closer to the truth, relieving the lure of material wealth. This belief feels better, killing yourself would prove nothing.

if there is an illusion of separateness it is consistent and connected with an illusion of a continuous self.
this construct can be useful but it interferes with a lot too.

It gently shrugs off death anxiety, and the awareness that prevents it from arising. It allows one to remember they are feeling better as they become closer to, relieving this anxiety

Maybe my answer doesn't contribute to the topic, but for me, the hive-mind is that, which can go really badly wrong as well as the single mind (ah, hehe, both have their goods and bads). Quite balanced imho in general. edit:The hive-mind can do bigger damage in general as well...hmmm But even the separate mind can cause revolutions....double hmmmm
