LHC Shut Down For 2 Months
    #8967955 - 09/22/08 12:28 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

The world's largest particle collider has been shut down for at least two months due to a large helium leak stemming from an incident Friday, officials said.

The Large Hadron Collider is a gigantic particle accelerator located in a nearly 17-mile-long circular tunnel along the French-Swiss border about 330 feet underground. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research, also known as CERN.

The collider was officially launched on September 10 when the first particle beam was successfully sent around the full circuit. On the heels of an earlier malfunction due to a faulty transformer, CERN said Friday's incident was most likely caused "by a faulty electrical connection between two magnets, which probably melted at high current leading to mechanical failure." At no time was there any risk to people, CERN added.

Although a full investigation is still under way, CERN announced Saturday that the section of the tunnel will have to be "warmed up" for repairs, which means the LHC will be down for at least two months.

The LHC experiments involve accelerating two beams of subatomic particles--called hadrons--in opposite directions to more than 99.9 percent the speed of light. Smashing the beams together will create showers of new particles for physicists to study using special detectors.

The result is expected to push forward theories of particle physics and the fundamental building blocks of all things. The LHC was designed primarily as an attempt to product the "Higgs boson," a hypothetical particle whose observation would help confirm some of the predictions in the Standard Model of physics. Other currently theoretical particles may also be observed for the first time, including microscopic black holes.

Some have theorized that the black hole experiments could go wrong with catastrophic results, but CERN has done extensive safety analysis and has repeatedly denied any such threat.

Guaranteed? hmmm  If there is some finite chance the LHC could make a black hole then 'natural' particle collisions must also have a chance of making a black hole.

So, dont rest easy

Possibly longer... they aren't talking about it, but then don't plan to run the thing during the winter months because of higher electrical costs during that time of year.  It may not go back online until next spring, even if it is ready long before then.

Yeah I never really expected them to do any significant experiments until next year... but this 2 month shutdown is a bummer.

I read the articles he did write, and based upon his rather insane understanding of science, he is fruity.  Whack.  Not all there.  Nuts.

Not really.  It is something that I have noticed with the crazies... they believe what they are shoveling with absolute conviction, and this is what draws others to them; their absolute certainty.  As others flock towards their conviction, it reinforces their beliefs.  The conviction feeds off of the belief, and the belief feeds off of the conviction.  This kind of crap ruins people's lives.  Hardly something to admire.

Modern science itself still has much to learn. Tesla wasn't considered all there either and without his inventions you would not be writing this.
And also please explain "reality". I know it's not sitting in front of my TV watching the news.
I am not saying I beleive everything on that site though.

Tesla was victimized by Edison over conflicting technologies.  Edison was a greedy bastard motivated by profit.  Tesla was a bit nutty as well, but he was also a genius.  To be honest, most geniuses are a bit nutty.  However, there is a huge difference between a genius that is a bit nutty and a complete nut that pretends to be a genius.  Don't confuse the two.

Theres a lot of writers that submit articles on that site. No matter how nutty he himself is doesn't mean all the articles he posts are worthless and untrue.
This thread is about the LHC however and its BROKEN.

Please show me where I made any such claim?  You are the only one bringing up the other authors.

> This thread is about the LHC however and its BROKEN.

Which is typical of particle accelerators.  The big difference is the LHC uses superconducting magnets which must be kept very cold.  What takes a few days on another accelerator to fix takes a few months on the LHC to fix.  Did you really expect the largest and most complicated machine ever built by mankind to work flawlessly the first time it was switched on?

> Obviously there weren't any geniuses building it :crazy2:

Actually, they are (assuming design in place of build).  I don't know why you would think otherwise.

I can find a few other posts by you saying he is fruity and your first post says you just went to his website and saw it for the first time. Wow you sure figure out people quick.
Also going by your last post... about months to fix... it also took them fuckers weeks to admit they fucked up and that the accelerator was broken. Of course you can't expect it to work properly the first time being fired up but when it doesn't go as planned they should admit they fucked up right away. They are fucking with shit that could have devestating consequenses to all humanity not just a car engine.
I am really not trying to be a dick but jees people sure like to cut other people down that they don't even know.  Jeff Rense has a LOT of alternative news your not gonna hear on the TV or read in the newspaper.

False choice, no one is saying you have a choice between the wigged-wonder and mainstream news, and in fact you don't.

Additionally, the integrity of the msm has nothing to do with the merits or truth of the wigged-wonder's site.

I don't even know what to make of your news synopsis.

How about you believe what you can verify and trust?  Bitching about the' MSM' is so vague as to be worthless.

I'm kind of curious where I can find a MSM news article that says obama is the second coming of jesus or that  we have to fight the terrorits because they took down the world trade centers.  By definition that doesn't seem like news at all.  Where are these blatant lies they feed people?  What is the relevance that other things happen in the world than "that"- whatever that is.

Just seems like your bitching about some conception of MSM when I think its pretty decent for what it is and tries to be.  I know your a beautiful and unique snowflake, but maybe recognize that the news and indeed world is the way it is because that's teh way people want it to be- people that may not be like you.

But serisously, what are these viewpoints that the news is pushing on you?  If your just talking about subtle range-of-debate and presumption of popularly held beliefs being the same as the readers', et cet I don't really think that's too legitimate.  While it would be nice to have 'more neutrality' it would seem incredibly tiring to try to purge all presumptions and undemonstrated facts/opinions from a story's scope and structure.
