FoxNews commentator Bill O'Reilly's website hacked
    #8963634 - 09/21/08 03:35 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

200 loyal followers Wikileaked

Two days after someone broke into the email account of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, unknown intruders have hacked the website of conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly and posted personal details of more than 200 of its subscribers.

The breach into BillOreilly.com came as retaliation for remarks O'Reilly made on FoxNews condemning the attack on Palin's Yahoo email account, according to Wikileaks, a site that makes it easy for whistleblowers, hackers and anyone else to leak documents.

As proof, Wikileaks posted a screenshot of the BillOreilly.com administrative interface that showed the names, email addresses, passwords, and home town of 20 subscribers of the website. In all, information belonging to 205 subscribers was intercepted, according to Eric Marston, CTO of Nox Solutions, the company that maintained the O'Reilly website.

The hack came in response to comments O'Reilly made on Fox News about the posting of contents of Palin's email account, including pictures of her daughter and her contact list.

"I'm not going to mention the website that posted this, but it's one of those despicable, slimy, scummy websites," O'Reilly said, according to this snippet from YouTube. "Everybody knows where this stuff is, OK, and they know the people who run the website, so why can't they go there tonight to the guy's house who runs it, put him in cuffs and take him down and book him?"

It's evident from the remark that no one bothered to tell O'Reilly that Wikileaks, the first site to publish the Palin email, is a multi-national, bulletproof organization that has successfully withstood serious take-down efforts before. He's not the first conservative to have his lack of tech credentials in doubt. In July, Republican presidential candidate John McCain confessed he was still "learning to get online" and "becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need."

According to Marston, the hackers were able to access the unsecured list by trying a large number of variations of the website's administrative URL. He said all affected members have received an email and a phone call informing them of the breach and urging them to change their password anywhere they may have used it. No credit card information was stolen, and the site has since been completely locked down, Marston said.

BillOreilly.com charges $4.95 for monthly premium membership. The O'Reilly Store sells hats, mugs, T-shirts and other assorted schwag.

While the information exposed on Wikileaks may seem minimal, it has the potential to imperil the BillOreilly.com subscribers listed in ways they may not have anticipated. A case in point is Carolyn Carpenter, 68, of Henderson, Nevada. The list showed she used a six-letter word from the English language to access her account. Early Friday evening, when told she should change all accounts that used the password, she replied: "Oh damn, I use it all over the place." ®

That sort of childish behavior is ridiculous and definitely should not be condoned.

Even if someone despises O'Reilly, it's not him that suffered, it was the private citizens who had registered on his site.

I'm not saying Bill has no rights, just that he needs a reality check.  A few reality checks.

Ah, a supporter of vigilante justice, eh?  Screw free speech, is that it?  Say something controversial, and expect innocent people to have their private information splattered across the internet for all to see?  Interesting position you are taking.  I don't know that I agree with you.

Edit: and before you claim that I am calling O'Reilly innocent, it is the subscribers that I am referring.

The subscribers got caught in the crossfire, ya.

But the way I see it, is that Bill gets an inordinate amount of free speech, and isn't held accountable to his frequent misstatements.  It's not justification per se, but those who have no avenue to be heard are going to find ways, and this is what we see here.

Who the fuck do you think you are?  The speech police?  He gets an audience because the people who listen want to.  You don't because the people don't want to hear your shit.  I suppose you think your entitled to air time on TV and the radio too, right?

Of course he is.  He gets hammered all of the time.

Yet again, someone in the political forum mistakes "justification" for a simple explanation of reality (or "inevitability").  Are you saying that because it's illegal and immoral to steal wallets that it never happens?  Because that would be the argument you'd have to make to call me wrong on this one.

I didn't see the word "justification" anywhere in his post.  It was exactly the same as yours.  You didn't say the ghetto thugs were justified, just that the wallet waver was stupid.  He didn't say that the rapists were justified, just that the bitch had it coming.  You can invent all the shit you want, but he didn't mention any call to justification.  Is it your position that stupid people are fair game for criminals?

I do sort of. Kind of along the lines of, only the strong will survive or "Darwinism" "natural selection".

Now I'm not saying that I would ever do anything to anyone, I am an upstanding citizen run my own business and am not a leach of society. I wouldn't condone idiots getting taken of advantage of but that's just how it usually happens.

Wrong. It can't be a justification without mentioning the rapist.

Regardless, however you want to semantic this argument to death, this is a justification:

True. I think that's how it generally works in society though, don't you? I don't think the term "only the strong survive" applies just to death. It also applies in business and day to day life.
What do you think?

You have a future as a conservative commentator, because a couple of posts later, I clarified with this: "It's not justification per se."  I don't know why you're blaming me for bringing semantics into this, because I'm just responding to your misrepresentations of my own argument, which I'm interpreting as inflammatory.  I come here to have healthy debates, and while I may sometimes stray from that line of approach, you never seem to be anywhere near that path.  Just grow up.  I'm researching at the moment for a serious post about rental reform, which I'll be posting in Money Matters, because I'm not sure it'll get the balanced feedback I'm looking for here.

Should we play a game of "Identify the fallacy presented above?"

> You have a future as a conservative commentator

Redstorm?  Conservative commentator?

(No offense, Redstorm, but I don't see that as a remote possibility.)

> I don't think the term "only the strong survive" applies just to death. It also applies in business and day to day life.

Perhaps, to a certain extent... but that is why we have laws to protect the rights of "weak".  For example, I don't consider generosity to be weak, but the greedy will prey on the generous unless there are laws that protect.  Same goes for computers; I don't consider people that are not computer experts to be weak, but we still need laws to protect the general computer user from the greedy.  Although some will try to justify preying on the weak, or uninformed, by claiming that they get what they deserve, I disagree.

Given the specific example of O'Reilly... nobody forces those that disagree with him to watch his show or listen to his drivel, yet somebody decided to "get even" with him, at the expense of innocent victims (the subscribers).  If the tables were turned, and it were Obama supporters that had their personal information posted on the web, I doubt the people that are defending the hackers would be defending the hackers.  There is a double standard here that is rather sad.

I wouldn't ever defend a hacker period. While I may find some of the things they do funny it doesn't mean that I condone it.

Why laugh at somebodies pain?  (I learned this one the hard way.)  If you haven't read the book, give "Stranger in a strange land" a try.

I understand what you are saying, but I don't agree with the mentality.

I'll laugh to myself if I don't think they'll see me because I wouldn't want them to be ashamed. Then again, I laugh at myself heartily when I trip and fall myself, especially if it is particularly clumsy.

I love PAL. It's the only place where I can be called a potential conservative commentator by liberals and a godless, race-mixing communist by one of our past particularly demented conservative members here.

And what exactly is this checking or balancing?

Ignore the fact that bill o'reilly talks about politics.  It is COMPLETELY irrelevant to this story.

Change the site to, oh gosh, how about the Shroomery.  The private information of 205 Supporters has been released.

Still all laughs, still feel it's all kosher because hey, man, it's just the 4th check and balance in the system?

that is completely beside the point.

you seem to be applauding the disclosure of private information because these people listen to somebody whose opinions you find distasteful.

would you feel the same way were this to happen to the shroomery supporters?

or are you every bit as bad as those christian extremist hackers (GOD DAMN I'M GLAD THEY'RE TOO BUSY BURNING ABORTION CLINICS AND GAY BASHING AND JUST TOO DUMB TO KNOW HOW TO HACK!) who you claim would do that to the shroomery?
That is, are you every bit as intolerant of people with opinions that differ from your own as the strawman-christian-extremists you've brought up?

It's looking like you may have already answered that question, but I'll throw it out anyway.

Oh, and I'll repeat the question from my first post.  Exactly what is the release of the private information of 205 subscribers to Bill O'Reilly's website checking or balancing that you can claim it is the 4th check/balance in our government?

I would like to clarify that although I am a moral person, I am not altruistic enough not to feel happy for the pain of my enemies.  I don't condone the actions, but yes, I'm glad that bastard got nailed.  Please be careful for taking the high ground on this one, because for someone so quick to judge, I doubt that you reach the highest levels of post-conventional moral development, although most people don't.

Quote:

Mushmonkey said:

If I had to psychoanalyze my posts from last night, I'd say that I have issues with people who speak from the pulpit, and to a much lesser extent, the sheep who listen to them.

When I said earlier that people like Bill got an "inordinate" amount of air time (forget the economics), perhaps a less subjective term would be "disproportionate."  The majority of Americans fall much closer to the center, and most of the other televised "liberal" news media, falls much closer to that center than does his show.  So ya, I don't see any reason to change any of my viewpoints on this subject.

I'd gladly continue my psychological interpretation of this today, as long as we keep it civil.

I never said they shouldn't listen to him, just that I don't like them.  It can't be helped.  Another interesting question to reflect on, would his listeners exist, in their current form of ideology and sociological phenom, if Rupert Murdoch/Fox/whoever, didn't think his particular brand of thought was good television?

I have a lot of respect for the people that coined the term hacker.  In the early days of computing, a hacker was somebody that knew a computing system better than the people that designed it.  Unfortunately, the term has changed over the years to describe a computer vandal.  In its modern sense, I would tend to agree with zappa; modern day hackers are not far removed from a kid with a can of spray paint.

No, you can laugh at something without supporting the entirety of it.

Laughter or amusement or intrigue or entertainment does not equal endorsement.

You can also be glad something happened without thinking that it was moral for it to happen.

The summer saw a surge in the number of hijacked home PCs or "zombies", say security experts.

The Shadowserver Foundation, which tracks zombie numbers worldwide, said it had seen at least a threefold increase in the last three months.

More than 450,000 computers are now part of zombie networks, or botnets, run by hi-tech criminals, it said.
The rise is believed to be linked to attacks that booby-trap websites to try to infect the machines of visitors.

Attack vector
Criminals are keen to recruit new machines to a botnet to create a resource that they can use or which can be hired out to other gangs.

Most spam or junk mail is routed through the hijacked machines forming a botnet. The collection of PCs are often used to launch attacks on other websites, as anonymous stores for stolen data and to help with phishing scams.
The vast majority of machines in these botnets will be PCs running a version of Microsoft Windows.

In June 2008 Shadowserver Foundation knew about more than 100,000 machines that were part of a botnet. By the end of August this figure had exceeded 450,000 machines.
The Shadowserver Foundation is a group of security professionals who volunteer their time to track and measure botnets to help law enforcement investigations.

The rise in numbers has been accompanied by a fall in the number of so-called command and control (C&C) servers tracked by the Shadowserver group suggesting that hi-tech criminals are concentrating their resources. As their name implies, the C&C servers co-ordinate the use of all the machines linked to them.

The jump in individual zombie numbers is linked to a series of wide-spread attacks that inject malicious code on to legitimate websites that tries to compromise any visiting machine.

In recent months many hi-tech criminals have turned to web attacks to recruit new victims rather than rely on sending viruses out via e-mail.
Typically, a machine is compromised via a vulnerability in one of the programs it runs. Inside this initial attack program will be code that directs it to contact a C&C server which then downloads software to put it completely under the control of a botmaster.

The machines in any individual botnet can be spread across many different nations.

Here is the kind of shenanigans /b/ usually pulls. I personally find things like this one funny as hell.

They are getting pretty good at trolling the media.

Who would have thought they could get Oprah to say their little motto -

    *  Anonymous is Legion.

    * Anonymous does not forgive.

    * Anonymous does not forget.

    * Expect us.

and then say over 9000 penises.
