Caps opening too soon, tiny shrooms?

Hey there - just started growing B+ strain. Ive got a great pinset, but it seems as if the caps are opening WAY too early, the shrooms are tiny!! Its almost as if they're abhorting... What causes this? I did a search but couldnt find anything. Another thing - growing cakes w/double ended casing tek. The pins that are doing this are all growing from the top vermiculite layer.
Thanks Zesty

Aborts' caps don't open. Pic's would help a lot in determining your situation.
As far as growing only from the top verm layer, I'd say your bottom verm is probably drier then... Moisten it well.

I had this problem on my first flush. Then I cold dunked the cakes for 24 hours and now I'm getting good old fashioned fat daddies.

Well, I just took a look at the cake, and the shrooms are twice the size that they were this morning...There are 12 pins comming off the top verm layer, and they all look very healthy. No signs of abhorting, whatsoever. (and believe me, I know what that looks like!!!!:)) They're all about 3/4 of an inch long, and about 8 of them have their caps open, and they're about 7mm - 1cm in diameter. They look like pins, with their caps open, and they're still growing. Wierd stuff. I have about 3 pins comming off the sides of the cake, and they look absolutely fine. Im assuming that, since mntlfngrs had the same issue with the same type cake - that it has something to do with the verm layer. I put the vermiculite in dry, could this be the problem? Should I pick these or see how big they get? Its only the first flush, and Im impressed with the pinset, even if they are behaving wierd.
Nothinghealz- I thought that it could be the cake being too dry - Ill try dunking after these pins develop.
Any ideas of the exact cause?
Thanks Zesty

I sacrificed one cakeand broke it up to make a casing. The inside seemed very moist so I don't think my humidity is the problem. I was almost thinking too much humidity? I alreadt picked a couple that had stopped growing and these seem to have stopped. I will leave these ones just to see what happens.

Could be too much humidity - mine was pegged near 100% for a couple days. I didnt notice any mycelium growing on the stems though, with the EQ's I grew, that was the first obvious sign that the humidity was too high.
What do you use for air exchange in your terrarium?

I was using a cool mist with a 3 chamber dryer system. On for 3 min every 2 or so hours. Then I tried a bubbler in the water that also had a fish heater (temp was dropping to upper 60's at night) for a while. That seemed to make more humidity. Of the two RH meters I have in there one pegs at 90 and the other at 85. Bother are the same cheap ass brand so they are obviously very inaccurate.

Dunk one of your cakes for 12 hours next time.... right at birth.... You should see a lot better fruits that way. Personally i don`t even mess with cakes any more. Casings are not that tough. Try a simple straight verm casing with a few cakes. Nice damp verm layer on top of crumbled cakes will re-hydrate the cake and usually produce nice sized fruits
