I NEED HELP ! im trying to get a muffin fan/cpu fan to plug into my normal wall outlet. the fan is 12v DC so how can i get it to plug into the wall? i have a 12v dc adapter used to charge a battery to my portable dvd player, can i just split the wires. and wire the fan straight to that? any comments are greatly appreciated. thanks

Well you can connect them to any 12 volt cordless drill battery very easy.
Also you know those things you use to charge up your cellphone? Usually its a black plastic heavy thing you plug into a wall socket and it has a long cord that connects to your cellphone. You also see these for other things like stereos, speakers, expensive scales, etc.
Those things are AC/DC converters. If you look closely at the writing it should tell you the voltage. If it is 12V you can just strip the wires and connect them up. You can sometimes hold them to the actual connectors and get them running, but its tricky to tape them there.
You should NOT connect a CPU fan to 120V AC power!

yea thats the thing im talking about...big black box has a wall cord and a cord that connects to a broke portable dvd player in my case. it says- input: 100-240v output: 12v
i took an electronics class in high school so i know a little bit about this stuff but wasnt for sure and didnt wana burn my house down

Yeah just wire it up and it'll work fine. You don't even need to check the polarity, if it's the wrong way around the fan will spin backwards, but that's it.

i do believe you will need to know the wattage of the fan as well as the dc converter, or maybe its the amps you need to know? either way, if you overload the charger im sure your risking a fire.
most older cpu fans don't have much pull, however the newer ones are like mini tornado's

You only need to know the voltage. The fan will draw whatever power (watts) it requires, as long as the power supply can provide it (which, in this case, it will).

what makes you think it will? i didn't see him list the wattage of the converter nor the fan unless i missed it

Well I've run fans off of cordless drill batteries.
As the batteries run out of power the wattage goes down... all that seems to happen is the fan slows down gradually.
Also, a lot of mobos you can control the wattage in the bios, so I don't think wattage is critical... but if it was really really high I wonder what would happen?

well the motherboards are built to output a certain amount, and the fans are designed to use that much, if it goes over then they add a an additional lead that you hook up to the power supply.
ive tried hooking up fans to a converter before, and i distinctly remember my fan being to much for the converter so i never hooked it up

I'm guessing. But a common current rating for transformers like that is 1 amp, while a CPU fan is more like 0.15 amps. There should easily be enough.

> what makes you think it will?
Exactly what I was thinking. If the AC Adapter isn't rated to provide enough current, then there is a fire hazard. It isn't that it won't work, but rather the AC Adapter can overheat and catch on fire.
> Well I've run fans off of cordless drill batteries. As the batteries run out of power the wattage goes down... all that seems to happen is the fan slows down gradually.
Wattage is a function of voltage and current. With a battery, the voltage drops as the battery discharges, thus the fan slows down.
> and i distinctly remember my fan being to much for the converter so i never hooked it up
Most modern CPU fans that I have seen are in the 1.5A range while most modern motherboards are designed to supply up to 3A. AC Adapters vary, but are typically in the 1A range.

thats interesting because mine was 1.0 amp and my converter was only like .300 or .500 something like that. infact i had to search and search to find a converter that was 1 amp and didn't buy it because the dam thing was like $30
but yah i just feel its best to not use "common" numbers when dealing with electricity and fires. the way i was told/taught is you want a safety net, and the ONLY way to know is to find the specs for the fan and the converter.
most older cpu fans are around the number you suggest, however on alot modern gaming machines that number is much higher. i think the fan i had that was 1 amp is actually 5-6 years old

That makes sense, I'm not surprised if my knowledge is somewhat obsolete

ok the supply is 12v 3.8a and the fan is 12v .12a so i should be good right? also how do i no which wires are +,- are you sure the fan will just spin backward if i guess wrong?

spec's look good to me, if you look closely you might be able to see + and - signs on the wires, otherwise connect color with color, if in doubt you could prob do a google search to know for sure.
another way is to just connect the leads to the fan, then plug in the converter for a second and if it spins your good if not then reverse them, im not sure what kind of possible damage this may cause....just make sure your wires never touch/cross, this includes before and while connected...and make sure you use electrical tape and also highly recommended would be twist wire caps of the proper size.

I'm pretty sure even brushless fans don't care about the polarity. If it's reversed, the fan spins backwards, that's it. Seuss would probably know for sure.

> I'm pretty sure even brushless fans don't care about the polarity.
Other way around. Brushed fans don't care about polarity and will spin backwards when polarity is reversed. Brushless fans fans use electronics, rather than brushes and gaps, to control the magnetic field. Depending upon the electronics, they may or may not care about reverse polarity.
