Re: Mycelium growth halted in rye - should I add to bulk? [Re: LightShedder]

I'll give it another day and update tomorrow as to how it looks, hopefully all the jars will be completely white, swaying back and forth, and singing in perfect harmony around their future home (the bag of shit).

I just dont want a fully colonized one to straight fruiting or something in the jar - which is what got me into this in the first place.

I think we are all agreed on this point - don't do this! No reason to shake perfectly fine jars. I personally don't see an issue with shaking a jar or two that are at 80%, esp. if you have distribution issues (for example, your first shake at 30% put most of the colonized grain on one side of the jar - has happened to me), but I'm just saying if you shake them once at higher than 30%, they recover - don't do it to jars that are perfectly fine!!

Just wait & let the other jars catch up... few days wont make a difference. I've left 100% jars sit for a while because I would be using them for G2G & I needed to prepare my grains.

One tip if you are not going to shake is use a marker to outline the uncoll. areas on the jar. Then you can see if there is day to day growth - might just be slow.

You were going to use 1005 jars for G2G transfers? I would have driven myself crazy preparing so much rye. Surely this is a typo or a misunderstanding. You managed to prepare 10,000 quarts of grain at one time?

Haha - damn, the SHIFT key on my keyboard sticks up. I of course meant 100% - fixed it in the original post. Thanks!

if you shake your rye jars and there is little/no growth afterwards, you more than likely have a bacterial contamination in your rye.

this is one of the most common cause of stalled growth in rye.

Well that sure does suck, and I haven't seen growth from 4 of them for some time now. Thinking I might just use one of the two good ones to g2g 6 more jars, and case the other good one.

Could be contams - try the marker trick I listed & make sure there is no growth...

you might get a little growth even though you have massive bacterial contamination.

if it's not growing at a steady pace, something is wrong. more than likely, its nothing you can fix.

If you shook the jar with plenty of myc in there and it hasn't recovered after a week I would be highly suspicious of bacteria in there.
