Pipe Trouble (Plumbing, not Weed)
    #8943651 - 09/17/08 12:44 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Ugh.  The other night this pipe in the corner of our basement started leaking hardcore, to the point of soaking the floor.  There's a big cooler under it collecting the water which we've been emptying into our sump pump when it gets full, which is pretty fast!  We have fans down there trying to dry it up but that's only really doing so much.

You can see in the second picture my dad has it patched or something with those clamps.  He plans to just plug up the holes the same way, but I have a feeling it's too big.  I mean those streams of water are just from me running the sink for less than 10 seconds to get the shot.  I know nothing about plumbing, what's the best course of action to take?  How expensive is one of those pipes?

One thing to keep in mind is money.  I'm not sure my dad even has enough to get a plumber.  We're in a pretty sticky financial situation and this is just the icing on the cake.

I was about to rush in here and preach the virtues of vaporizers.
Sorry, I've done lots of construction. And I've sat around. A classic after noon tradition for many construction guys.

But pipes? That's beyond me man.
Good Luck bro.

wow olde lead oakum joints its gonna suck to get that repaired.

look for the leak or crack cause of the hose clamps.

you have to find the leak that would aid in the fix.

The leaks are exactly where the water is coming out.  It's a literal hole.  How a hole got through a lead pipe this thick is beyond me.

What's the best way to ensure no mold will grow?  We're using the fans so there's airflow, but I'm thinking of scrubbing the floors and walls with bleach water or something when the whole ordeal is finally over.

I just got off the phone with my Dad and he told me a week or so ago he used a bottle of Drain-O to clean the shower drain.  It worked wonders, but I think it's the culprit.

So far so good.  It sealed it right up.  It was tricky because each time I dried the surface it got wet again but it seems to be holding up.  I'll check back on it later, but I'd still feel better with more aluminum squares and those clamps on top of it.

Scratch that.  I just went to check and one is still leaking around the putty.   They shouldn't advertise that it works on wet surfaces.

I just sealed up a lead pipe the other day with an epoxy putty. Do you have any way to shut off the water? I'd imagine it will be very hard to patch up with water still pumping through. You might also try soldering the whole closed, but wtih a hole that small, gravity is going to kick your butt IMO.

I haven't had any leakage since using the epoxy, and my hole was a LOT bigger than yours. Damn 60 year old apartments.

But really, if it is your place, getting those pipes updated would be ideal. If money is really a big issue, you can use the epoxy to patch it up.

I'll take pictures of mine later if I get a chance. Good luck m8

look into ABS, newbieshroomie

also, where ya located? if your within' 100 miles ill work for 10$/hr+supplies and get it done rather fast

a plumber costs around 130$ just for the visit, then supplies, and about 30$/hr to fix.
that looks like a few hour fix there.

also, if u can, have that replaced with ABS asap.

and lead/cast pipe is a bitch of a job, u need the specialty pipe cracker which is like a come-along with a chain that tightens around the pipe and has little round wheel-blades. fortunately once u have that section cut out, they make fernco fittings that u can go from iron/lead to ABS with, and they are inexpensive.

its definitely something u can try and do a home repair on with little experience, but it needs to be up to code or its a major fine.
just remember, shit rolls down hill, and dont have any obstruction in the pipe AT ALL.

yeah and how u got a hole in that in the first place amazes me, any earthquakes lately?

pissing in the wind....

you need to find out if it's XH or SV pipe, the pipe it's self
is made of iron, lead is used to seal the joints, you can find
PVC-Cast Iron hub adapters, they look like this but you vave
to know the type, that will involve taking the pipe down and
measuing the Inside diameter and the wall thickness as well as
the O.D. to get the right one and make sure you get the
sealant as well

http://plumbing.hardwarestore.com/52-333-pvc-adaptors/pvc-to-cast-iron-adapter-240648.aspx

to remove the lead it's gonna be a process with a screwdriver,
it'll take a while, a torch wont melt the lead, the iron will
absorb the heat, you can then replace that length of pipe with
PVC... you may need a fernco on the opposite end and more
support for the plastic
