Some help with my Psychotria viridis
    #8942602 - 09/17/08 03:31 AM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys, I've got a relatively young/small Psychotria viridis.

Lately the leaves have started to look like they're dying, like in this picture:

I'm not sure why this is, so I was hoping you guys could tell me what I'm doing wrong. My friend thinks I'm over-watering it. I water it daily, but only a small amount, and mist it throughout the day.

Thanks guys!
Oh, here's a picture of the beautiful pot my friend painted for me.

are you misting with tap water?
in that second pic it seems that there is some build up of salts or something on the leaves, that could be a problem...
over watering could also be an issue, i suggest that you let the soil dry out between waterings and then give it a good soaking.

are you giving it any nutrients? the yellow leaves would be a sign of not enough nutrients.

Okay, thanks heaps for those tips. I've never grown any plants before, but I'm really interested in starting. I'm just misting with tap-water, I take it that's a no?

I haven't been giving it any nutrients, what would you recommend? Thanks for your help. I hope she grows up nice and strong.

tap water is ok for an occasional misting, but if you are misting it every day then the solids suspended in the water can build up on the leaves causing them to brown...
perhaps distilled water or rain water would be better...

not really sure what type of nutrient this plant likes as i have never grown it before, however i should think that any generic plant fertilizer would be fine, miracle grow for example.
someone else with experience will confirm, there are a few people around here who grow it :yesnod:

It looks like it needs more rootspace and fresh potting soil. Also they don't need misting at all.
The leaves look physically damaged also. Maybe from transporting??
And check the underside of the leaves for mites. Bugs love Phsychotria.
  Heres a pic of mine...

I agree with uare, they need ferts and they do not need misting unless perhaps you are in the desert. Even if you were in the desert, you could just put a dome over them. Misting leads to mold. My psychotria are taller than I am and grow outside. They do not like freezing though.

Use a complete fert like peter's 20 20 20. Don't fert all the time, give them a dose now and wait and see. Let the soil dry out completely before watering again.

The problem is that it is totally underpotted.
This one is REAL viridis so it does grow very slowly compared to other psychotrias.
BTW CPW´s are P. alba.

Thanks for the replies guys. So I should re-pot my plant into a bigger pot and stop misting every day - then see what happens?

I'll try and get it done tonight. Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how it goes.

yup. and don't worry about giving ferts right now if you are putting it into fresh soil...
the fresh soil should have enough nutrient to keep it happy for at least a couple of months, if you notice any yellowing of the leaves later on then you should consider feeding it :yesnod:

seems like a common misidentification, someone has been passing p.alba off as p.viridis obviously :yesnod:

Maybe mine were Alba after all. I had some Viridis seeds sent to me through another forum but they were still in the fruits and they rotted in a plastic bag

The seeds are quite solid, if the flesh of the fruit is rotting you just plant it all and it should germinate anyways.

I´ve seen loads of Albas being sold as viridis in a famous auction site.

My psychotrias have been positively ID'd as viridis and I got them from a reputable vendor. However, on occasion the leaf margins will appear wavy. This could be due to growing conditions or other factors so I would not tout that as a fool proof method of differentiating them. If most or all leaves looked that way, then perhaps.

I will take a pic of my pv bushes which are fast becoming trees. Not sure when I'll get it done.

Hey stoney, nice to see you around friend!

There is also Psychotria carthaginensis which is something between viridis and alba. And which is very active, tested by myself.

Yeah thats what it is I think
But yeah Stonehenge is right. When they were indoors in the cold with no humidity the leaves were very very wrinkley and ugly looking. I am sure if I were in a tropical climate they would be even smoother.

Another detail - true viridis doesn´t have the tip that alba has. Check out the pic upwards.
