Is there such a thing as a "gnostic church"?

Would it be called a plain "gnostic church" or would it have some fancy name? There don't seem to be any literal "gnostic churches" in my area.

not these days. rewind 2000 years and yes, i believe there were. that is, until they were brutally repressed for "heresy."

Theresa a few in NY and Jersey. I just googled it though.
Heres a good web page of a bunch of gnostic churches.

www.gnosis.org would be a good place to start.

I wonder about this too, especially considering how many different derivations there are of the core Gnostic ideas.

The Ecclesia Gnostica seems to be a pretty cool thang. They have parishes in LA, Portland, Seattle, Salt Lake City, and in Oslo (Norway).

why do americans always say city (country name)?
such as london (england) in the new york times, as if one wrote london without england in parantheses and the readers would immediately assume it was about a small town in kentucky. or if you were to say only oslo and people assumed it's about a hamlet in minnesota.
is it self-centeredness? --if you don't specify it's not about us, we will just assume it's about ourselves. or is it like bill bryson said, people are lazy and don't want to think?

I'd say the closest thing that you will find to a "gnostic church" would be one of the more mystical branches of Judaism such as Chasidic Mysticism.

Off-topic. I am forced to ask the question, who gives a fuck?
As far as I know, the "old York" is in fact called Yorkshire. Why did they put that "shire" at the end? It's a Britain-specific word. Is it self-centeredness? Those self-centered British assholes.

well, there don't seem to be any ecclesia gnosticas or anything around me, so maybe I will try out a unitarian universalist church. I'm just a little wary that they will be worshipping the One big invisible giant in the sky.

or too much focus on being a "good" upstanding member of society...which is fine, but doesn't have much to do with cultivating deeper experience

Yeah, I'm sure compassion, and a general feeling of openness towards your fellow man doesn't have anything to do with your conscious experience of the world around you.
"church" provides community, if that is what you are looking for.

Agnostic > A-gnostic > not a gnostic/without gnosis

You think being a "good upstanding member of society" equates to being compassionate and open?
I'm sure there is overlap but I would never equate them.

Yes, I do; I treat others the way I expect to be treated.

In Canada if you say London, it's assumed you mean the one in England. You have to say London Ontario to talk about the other one, and it's a reasonably sized city at that.

It's exactly what makes a "a "good" upstanding member of society".

That's a pretty random and very anal response.
