Stalemates In Philosophy
    #892636 - 09/19/02 07:19 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Post 'em if you got 'em.

1. Free Will vs. Determinism
a. Randomness Exists vs. Ordered Universe
2. Why?
3. God Exists vs. God Doesn't Exist

Keep the comments to a minimum for now, please.
I'm thinking of writing a FAQ for these stalemates so that we can save some time by NOT repeating the same arguments over and over. I think it will help ensure harmony around here.

well im not educated enough on the subject to know stalemates but heres some that i ponder alot

Can happiness exist without ugliness to make it happy?

Is war part of human nature, or just a bad idea someone had several thousand years ago that could have been logically dismissed?

Is there a 'true' reality of how humanity functions in the world, or is everything just based on majority perspective?

blegh

In reply to:

1. Free Will vs. Determinism

hehe I don't happen to think this one is a stalemate in itsellf. the problem lies in that some believe in consciousness existing in some supernatural realm, and others believing only what can be observed; that consciousness exists in the brain. one's opinion on free will vs. determinism a vast majority of the time depends solely on this

Historically, truth was grasped by only a few (for various reasons). However, I don't think truth can only be grasped by a few... Maybe one day people will put down their Maxims or Cosmos and pick up a philosophy book instead. Wishful thinking, I know, but I can always keep that hope alive.

Now, back to the topic at hand.... stalemates. I'm all ears.

Oh goody! Another FAQ!

4. Realism/Idealism

The reason that these 'stalemates' exist is that the various camps cannot agree at the foundation. This is why idealists and realists cannot advance individually or contribute to the advancement to philosophy as a whole. The sciences are able to do this because of its adherence to methodological naturalism and its exclusion of teleology.

5. Logical Postivism/Metaphysics

And so on....

Cheers,

You already mentioned my favorite stalemate:

God exists vs. God doesn't exist..

have you ever noticed how believers blame non-believers for everything that's wrong with the world and non-believers blame believers for everything that's wrong with the world?

Thank God for philosophical stalemates!

I think you have a great idea in making an FAQ however, unlike the other forums this is one where repetetive threads are a great thing. Debate, so long as it's healthy shouldn't be discouraged. Even though there are stalemates and I will never bring you to my side nor me to yours, maybe some understanding will come from them none the less.

OH YEAH...you said hold the comments to a minimum......disregard this entire post!!!

I've got a good one called Creation and Evolution existing simultaneously.

THUS FAR:
1. Free Will vs. Determinism
a. Randomness Exists vs. Ordered Universe
2. Why?
3. God Exists vs. God Doesn't Exist
a. Metaphysics/Logical Positivism (should this go here, Mr. Mush?)
4. Realism/Idealism (I thought the mean was Pragmatism)
5. Creation/Evolution

Capitalism/Socialism is more POLITICS tinged with philosophy?

You have a good point, but I figured this FAQ would only be a guideline for those posters whom are unfamiliar with the basic premises of the arguments.

I don't think that faith and reason are necessarily opposed.

Thanks for the help.
1. Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.

Faith in self.
When there is more than one definition for a given word, it necessarily follows that the word in question cannot mean ONLY one of those definitions.
