Noob Advice from a Complete Noob
    #8925466 - 09/13/08 08:25 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Several months ago, I started reading a lot of the teks and posts on Shroomery and bought a book about the PFTek method, which, from strictly a common sense standpoint, seemed like a very complicated process.  Mixing up jars, PCing, Shaking, Dunking, Rolling, fruiting chamber with perlite, misting, fanning, etc...

Then, I stumbled into all the advice around growbags, which seemed infinitely more practical for a person not interested in "commercial" growing.  After having tried it, I can report it is infinitely easier than the PFTek method or any method requiring a grow tub, misters, humidifiers, etc.  Grow bags really work and theyre incredibly easy.

Heres the key.  Instead of using your spore syringes to inoculate jars, use the spores to make liquid culture instead.  There are plenty of teks on the site, but I just used the malt/dextrose method into PCd quart jars.  Then, you make up large growbags (holds 5-7 pounds of substrate easily) according to either the "wronguy bags" or "poo w/extras" formula and then you PC those growbags according to that tek and simply inoculate with the liquid culture and forget about it.  There is nothing left to do except maybe shake up the bag after a week and thats it.  No casing necessary.  No fruiting chamber necessary.  No misting necessary.  No fanning necessary.  No dunking necessary.  No patching necessary.  And Im telling you, lots of mushrooms come up.

So here is the steps:

1. Prepare some quart jars with a liquid culture mixture and then inoculate with a syringe.  ITS VERY, VERY EASY!
2. Prepare a large growbag with a filter patch on it with the formula from Wronguys bags or Poo with extras (make sure it has wild bird seed  in it) and PC those bags.  You can seal the bags before you PC them if you want.  The filter patch provides for hot air exchange no problem.
3. Let the bags cool and then inoculate with the live culture which takes about 10 days to develop in the quart jar.
4. Put the bags in the dark for a week then shake them then in about another week or so, theyll be ready to put under some light and then in another couple of weeks, youll have a lot of mushrooms.

Im telling you, it is infinitely easier than all the crap you have to do with the PFTek method.  And all you have to buy is 1) Some spores in a syringe 2) A couple of large syringes - I suggest 60cc)  3) Some large grow bags with filter patches  4) the stuff in the formula from Wronguys bags or Poo w/extras and if you cant get all that stuff, just use some dried horsepoo, vermiculite and wild bird seed, itll work perfect.  And thats it.

Believe me, youll be glad you did this method.  All the teks and instructions on how to do each of these steps is on the site.  Contams are simply not a big problem.  Ive had no issue at all and I dont have a flow hood, glove box or even a sterile room.  The reason you dont get contams is because you never really expose anything except a syringe needle to open air and its pretty easy to keep a syringe needle clean with a cotton swab of alcohol.

IT WORKS and Its EASY and inexpensive.  I cant believe more people dont start out with this method.

Great Post! a wise man once told me:

Quote:

i hydrate coco fiber to field capacity. I then add the brf, no special arount just enough that you see it has been throughly mixed in. then i add the flax and throughly mix. with the flax i use about 25% of what i used of the brf. next i add the amaranth grain. i use alot of this. i like it when a a small clump the size of a quarter visably has a decent amount of amaranth. it looks like a bunch of poppy seeds had been added because of the tiny size of the grain. your substrate should almost seem to dry at this point because of all the dry ingredients that have been added. next i add the earthworm castings(i like wiggle worm brand). i add this straight out of the bag. i generally add roughly a 1/3 of the amount of cocofiber used. this should change the color of your substrate to a darker blackish brown. next will be adding the straw. now its hard to generally get the moisture content right on the straw because it tends to hold a little too much water but this doesnt matter because our dry ingredients will absorb this moiture. i like to use finely cut straw but its too much work so i have been using critter country bedding. critter country can be tricky because you have to rinse the binder out. pillow cases wont work for this as they wont let the muddy looking binder through. i use LD Carlson brand nylon straining bags, the jumbo coarse ones that are 18"x32". This can be found at any brew supply store or online. i fill these with the critter country about a 1/4 the way up. soak in hot water in a 5 gallon bucket for about 15-30 mins. i then take this out to the kitchen sink, the garbage disposal side so you dont colg you pipes. you want to mix and rinse these till you end up with looks like coco fiber but its just fiberous straw. if you need more help with this let me know. if your using cut straw all you need to do is soak over night and drain for a hour. since we have prepared straw we add this to are coco fiber/brf/grain/castings blend. i use equal ratios of the kicked up coco and straw. sometimes m e even more straw because it is the cheapest ingredient. after all this is mixed it should somewhat resemble poo with a bunch of amaranth. this is now ready to be loaded into bags. i like fungi perfecti's bags as they are larger and taller then others. the filter seems a little different also but this doesnt matter they all do the same thing. I fill the bags about 6in deep. this will be plenty of substrate. sorry i dont have exact measurements on most things as i go by sight and experience. next time a load some bags up i will measure all that i add so it will be more exact. things change all the time and avaliablity changes so i alter things alot. sometimes i will add quinoa, sometimes i will substitue poppy seeds or rye or birdseed for amaranth. although birdseed and rye will need a soaking before using. ocassionaly i will add grass seed. nothing is written in stone you just need to manipulate things with what you have. i have added coffee before, hemp seed, millet, barley, etc, etc. hell i have even used lawn clipings as a additive. however i do find i get the best yields with the original recipe i was describing. good luck! now as far as the flowhood mines from fungi perfecti but there are many how-to-build teks for flowhoods floating around. just dont skimp on the blower or filter that would be just asking for problems. if you need help wiring a blower i will try to help. i have heard of people substituing different things for a impulse sealer but i recommend just breaking down and buying one. professional equipment=professional results. also i highly recomend only spawning these bags with grain otherwise you may bump into other difficults. pf cakes work but not as well. LC's and spore syringes and your just begging for problems. talk to you soon!

The pf tek was designed to allow people without access to a pressure cooker to grow a few mushrooms and with little expense.

The pf tek is easy and doesnt even need a complicated fruiting chamber, people have used empty soda bottles as fruiting chambers.

Kudos to you for finding a method that works for you and give you results.

There are many people that use your method. Just like there are many that use the pf tek. Not everybody posts about it
