how well would vegetable oil work in a grain substrate
    #8914328 - 09/11/08 06:49 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

How well would vegetable oil work in a grain substrate to prevent yeast and bacteria from causing fermentation?

I saw in some literature that oil coats either bacteria or yeast cells and prevents them from stimulating the others with enzymes.

Has anyone ever noticed a grain spawn jar that was supplemented with vegetable oil with a blotch or yeast contam? Any grain alcohol smell, from these jars?

Not to say that it would not occur but I think it would not go so far, that is the fermentation.

See, sometimes I would be too impatient and soak the ryegrass seed for only a little while and it wasn't long enough to get those heat resistant bacterial endospores.

BUT!

If there had been an oil present wouldn't that made it more difficult for that bacteria? By coating it's cell wall and preventing those enzymes they generate that stimulate the other bacteria.
Plus! By making it difficult for it to digest nutrients too?

Dunno if this is an Advanced Mycology question or a Mushroom Cultivation question. Maybe both.

Yeah morels can give you prints. They sporulate upon exposure to high vapor pressure, as long as it is a specimen that is ready to sporulate, otherwise it has to mature a little after being picked.

I don't have the means to supply spores to anyone, and I only have about a gram of yellow morel spores, and even less of black morel, and even more less of half-free morel.

I think Workman can hook you up though. And he does research on morels as well.

I've heard of people mixing vegetable oil in their substrate for extra nutrients, and dumping it on mycelium, but nothing about coating grains. I guess the only way to really know is to experiment. I would try a batch with the oil and one without for a control. See if the jars with the oil colonize faster or healthier...

Yeah, Mycelio said that it would most likely work.

And I've added a small amount to my M. atrotomentosa in the pyrex bowl.
Since two days have went by with it in the bowl, the lump appears to be getting larger.
Won't know until a full week has past.
