How many out there know what time signitures/polyrythems are?
    #8917317 - 09/12/08 11:00 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

As in do you listen too music which uses alternate time signatures or play them?  (6/8 doesn't count if it's the ballads beat :tongue2:)

And....! Yes I know everyone here will know Pink Floyd - Money 7/8

Jaco's 6/4 Jam is in 6/4!

Yes, I listen to tons of music with time signatures others than 4/4. A lot of people do. I don't necessarily always pick up on it, but usually I do.

whaa Jaco's 6/4 Jam?

I know allot of people on here listen to electronic music which is usually 4/4 so it could be interesting.

Jaco's 6/4 Jam is exactly that. A song called 6/4 Jam by Jaco Pastorius (please tell me you know who that is.)

I know that Meshuggah uses polyrhythms but I'm not that big a fan of them. Anyways, as far as unconventional time signatures, yea, not most but some of the bands I listen to occasionally employ them.

If you mention a Brubeck song when talking about time signatures then Take Five is an obvious choice. Radiohead does a lot of rythmn changes and shit as well.

A lot of Mahavishnu Orchestra is done with wierd timings, as is a lot of Fusion from that era.  My last drummer was a time wiz and we would go in and out of all sorts of different time signatures during our jams.  My favorite one that we would land on often was 5/8 (we'd sometimes divide it as 10/8 to get some lopsided accents).  9/8 is fun, its kind of like a triplet driven 3/4.

Polyrhythms are fun too.  My drummer would often play a 3/4 beat with the bass, and play 4/4 up top, then after 12 beats when the accents would match up, he would switch to playing 4/4 bass, and 3/4 up top.  It creates a really ambiguous rhythm that opens a lot of improvisational possibilities. You can do this with all sorts of different timings.

Erotomania by Dream Theater has a really cool division of the beat.  I forget the exact time signatures right now, but if you listen to it you'll see what I mean.
